Attempt to make edited versions of existing civilizations, cannot figure out problem

Hi

This is my fist time making/attempting to make a Civ 5 mod

I decided to try and follow the outdated Kael's guide, and decided to try and just edit existing civilizations, however the only one affected is Rome/Italy which becomes a new Civ and the unique new units (no artwork) do not work, nor does the abilities of the Civ. The rest do nothing due to "Column type not unique".

If you look into my mod files and notice anything Swiss, ignore it, I will fix the problems with it at another time. Thanks for any help that you may give to me.

I used whoward69's downloadable xml files as a base for the civs rather than the ones in assets. Whole database file was over 100000 characters long, so I removed the parts near the top that were the same as everything but Italy.

Based off of this, should I rename the other civs (besides Italy) then find a solution for the unique unit problem, so they will be different?
 
  1. No game table that has both <ID> and <Type> columns can ever accept a repeat of either of these settings within any <Row> presented within a mod.
    • 'Repeat' includes the data in the unmodded version of the game, so , since there is already a LEADER_CATHERINE registered in a <Row> in the game-table <Leaders>, your mod can not have a repeat of that.
    • Any file where any such repeat occurs is completely discarded (ie, not used) by the game
  2. Any repeat within the <Language_en_US> (or any of the other Localization Language-tables) of a <Row Tag="TXT_KEY_SOMETHING" > that the game already has a <Row> with a definition of that Tag Name for, will also cause complete file discard.
  3. You are doing this all over the place.
    • If you aren't actually changing anything from the base game's information, you don't need all these files anyway, so eliminate them
    • If you want to alter the existing information the game has for a leader, a unit, a civilization, etc., you do so using an <Update>, which was also covered in Kael's guide, and you only change the small portion of it you need to alter, not the entire definition of the Building, Unit, Policy, Civilization, Promotion, etc.
Also, you are using table-names that do no exist within the game.

Your file-path structure might be slightly different depending on whether you have Win7 or Win8, etc., but everything after the "\Steam\SteamApps\" part ought to be the same.
 
Sorry for the late response and thanks for your help (especially on how I should have been using updates rather than essentially the same thing that was there) I clearly made horrid mistakes on this. I will try to troubleshoot it now as there are still many, many errors left.

Currently I am having an issue with adding in units and the existence of modified units; When I play tested as England battleships simply did not exist and as Germany there just was not a Panzer upgrade for tank or land-ship.

Wow, I'll be honest here, I think you are trying to do way too much all at once with far too many parts going on right now.

You say this is your first time making a Civ5 mod, but your archive contains no less than fourteen (14!) Civs you're trying to modify simultaneously. I can't express just how many things could go wrong with that.

By itself, not a problem if you knew what needed to be changed, but you're also using template files, which are a pain in the rear for us to read through because there's so much unnecessary clutter in there.

I would definitely advise you pare that down, go slow, and pick one Civ to modify at a time. Get that working first, and then at least you'll have an idea of the steps needed to modify the rest of them.

Based on the contents of the log file you posted, it sounds like there are issues with the files where you define the Units, UnitClasses, and Traits. Errors with those files, depending on the kind of error, may typically cause the game to abort the entire file, and that cascades into further errors like you see, where it can't find something that should have been added, but the game couldn't because of said error.
 
Ok, thanks for the suggestion, I will now try to make each modification/new Civ individually first and then once are are working re-combine them. Thanks for all of the help.
 
One thing I saw in at least one unit file is assignment of a unit to an incorrect UnitCombatClass. Rifleman-type units, for example are UNITCOMBAT_GUN not UNITCOMBAT_MELEE. See this lsiting.

Another mistake you are making is referencing unit art defines such as this one: ART_DEF_UNIT_U_IMPERIAL_JAPANESE_MODERNSAMURAI

But that unit art define is not anywhere I was able to see within your mod. It certainly does not exist within the base game. Anything you refer to in your mod's XML must either already be part of the base game (in which case you just use the reference in your mod) or you must define that to which you are refering. I am guessing this issue with the ArtDefine came from doing global 'Find-and-Replace' editing of the files.

If it succeeded, would change all traits to have that. Every <Update> should not only have a "Set" clause, it should also have a "Where" clause so the game will know (literally) where to apply the change(s).

I am also guessing that PopulationUnhappinessModifier may not be able to use a positive value. The only way to be certain is to try it and find out when you add the needed <Where Type="xx" />

Also, look to see with your updates and changes that you are not inadvertently trying to tell the game that one unit or one building belongs to more than one UnitClass or BuildingClass or UnitCombatClass.

Assigning a unit to UNITCLASS_RIFLEMAN in the definition of the unit, but then inadvertently trying to assign the same unit as a unique one to a civ, but using the wrong unit-class designation in table <Civilization_UnitClassOverrides> will tend to completely confuse the game and will generally result in file-fail of one kind or another. It can also cause direct CrashToDesktop when such conflicts exist.

A quick look through some but not all your files makes me think you are doing something wrong in this sort of way with UNIT_DUTCH_SEA_BEGGAR
 
Thanks for all the help, I decided to just make them all new, different Civs instead of just editing them as I also wanted custom names for units and such. My Log says there are now no issues, however I lack a scroll bar while choosing the Civs on non-advanced set up.

I think this is because I added so many new Civs, as earlier when I was just play testing with 4, the scroll bar was still there. Is there some way to fix this?

No Scrollbar means there is at least one civ that does not have at least two uniques of units, buildings, or improvements successfully assigned to it. Nothing else causes this condition that I know of.

Since you are getting no error in the Database.log, then for at least one of your civs you do not have a total of at least two entries in the tables: <Civilization_BuildingClassOverrides> and/or <Civilization_UnitClassOverrides> or an entry of <CivilizationType> within the definition of a unique improvement under the <Improvements> table.

Also, make sure you shut off every other mod that adds a new civilization to the game. You can never be sure if you have too many mods running at once if the problem is actually in your mod, or if it is originating in some other mod.
 
I found the problem; I wanted the new Netherlands to keep polders but did not realize that improvements are linked to civs from the improvments xml rather than from the civilization xml like for buildings and units.
