I'd say that John Cusack is my fav actor, but that may change after I see that chick flick that he did with Julia Roberts.

I also have to mention Jeff Bridges & John Goodman for their roles as "The Dude" & "Walter" in The Big Lebowski.

The most versatile major actor in recent times is Robert Duvall.

My personal favorites are Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Mel Gibson, Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, and Morgan Freeman.

Actresses include Jodie Foster and Katherine Hepburn.
 
Vivien Leigh is my idol and the greatest thespian that ever lived imo.

Elizabeth Taylor is #2.
 
There are far too many greats out there to pick one. I'll just list a few of my favorites.

Actors: Gary Cooper, Richard Burton, Kirk Douglas, Rex Harrison, etc. They just don't make actors like that anymore.

Actresses: Luckily, modern actresses do not seem to be suffering the talent drain that actors are. Cate Blanchett is the best active in the craft right now. Also Jodie Foster and Meryl Streep are two good current actresses. Patricia Neal is probably one of my old time favorites.

I really like Sean Bean these days, one of the few who I'll watch any movie if it has him in it.

Honourable mentions to Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Kate Winslet.
 
just want to mention Nathan Filion, maybe not the greatest but enjoyable and man can that guy ever get a break?
 
No one has mentioned Tom Hanks? The man has to be one of the best character actors in history (Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, among many others).

I'm also partial to Nicolas Cage.
 
I like that Gene Hackman. Yeah laugh all you like, but have you seen him as Popeye Doyle?
