I have 1 IDE drive and 1 SATA drive. Whenever I have both of them plugged in, the system (win xp) will always try to boot from the IDE. The option to choose the SATA drive as boot drive would be automatically disabled in the BIOS. I wonder why is this the case.

The OS on your computer doesn't have anything to do with the boot order, it'll all be set through the BIOS. Is it disabling it so that you can't select the SATA drive to boot from? I'd take a browse through your motherboard's manual.
