I loaded Civ 4 and had it update with 1.52. The initial installation went fine, but the update stopped almost at the end with a "catastrophic failure" event. But the game seemed to load so I ignored it and went on. However I discovered a HUGE number of bugs, one of which makes it impossible to play. When I go into my civics screen, there is no revolution button, only a cancel button that undoes all my changes. The only way out of the screen is to hit ESC which of course kills any changes I tried to make. So I thought I would uninstall and try again. but when I try to uninstall from the windows control panel, it goes immediatly into the patch installation again (which continues to end in catastrophic failures) So now I can't get rid of it, I can't play it, and I can't seem to fix it. HELP?

Try a manual delete & reinstall - it may not work if the failed attempt has left entries in the Registry - more later

Reboot - try add/remove again - success or failed do the following

Delete the Civ IV Directories in:

- Programs/Firaxis
- My Documents / My Games
- C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\My Games\Civilization IV\ Its a hidden directory if not seen just check you have "show hidden files" switched on

Load from discs
Load Patch V1.52

If still issues you may have Registry problems - fixable, probably just deleting rougue entries, but you need a Registry aware individual to help you in this event - messing with the Registry if you are not used to it can be terminal - its not a topic to guess about ....

Post again if issues - someone will pick you up - include a copy of your Dxdiag dump

I am pretty savvy with the registry if I find out what key to look in. I have no problem doing whatever I need to in there if the instructions are clear.

When you say a manual uninstall, are you referring to a different uninstaller somewhere or are you talking about removing the directories and registry entries?

Manual install - go to the disc and delete the directories shown

Re registry - excellent - but I dont know what key settings you may have to delete. It may just be in Local_Machine & Current_User, I dontknow, so was just being cautious. It may not cometo registry hack, may be ok after going thro manual delete and reinstall - its possible the install routine overwrites/deletes bad entries - latter is a guess tho

OK I had to manually go through the registry looking for every key with "Civ" in it and removing them. Then delete the directories, icons, and files. Finally I could reinstall the cd's. This time, I tried running before installing any patches and it works like a champ so far. The game is a little boring compared to previous versions, but it is running and all the issues I had with the previous installation were gone. I am thinking I do not want to install any patches. Any comments?
