Please decribe in detail your build order for the start of the game for the first 15 to 20 minutes on Deity. And Your build order when you first create a new city, any tips of the trade to get a great start on the rest of your opposition would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a deity neophyte, but I don't think there is any specific build order that everybody uses. In fact, I'm certain there is not. Many players like to build a warrior/scout or three and then a granary in the capital, but then many do not. First build(s) in any new city vary greatly depending on the situation - anything from military to a worker to a settler to a temple to a ....

LiquidTank: if you ask such a question, you probably shouldn't play deity. ;)

Renata is right: There is only one rule: There is no rule.

Except maybe, that you build a unit first, if your civ is not expansionist. I (most?) tend to build up to 3 warriors, some prefer spearmen, before building settler or granary. Except if you go OCC. You see: the rule applies. :D

Everything you need to get started on the Deity level is there:

I highly recommend that article.

Thankyou moonsinger, I found those articles to be a great help. Oh and tao because I choose a more challenging level to greater improve my game doesn't mean I should abandon it because my skill level is not as good as yours. Perhaps it is your M.O. to tuck tail and run when the going get's tough, I on the other hand will always advance furthur regardless of my skill level and I will overcome all obstacles at a greater rate than you because I choose to challenge myself. try playing basket ball in the rain, and the next day play a regular game in the sun and see how much you improve under easier conditions. - My 2 Cents

Where the heck did that come from? All I said was that there was no specific build order everyone follows, which is nothing but the truth. And then I proceeded to give some gneral guidelines anyway. Why the hostility?

Ah, yes. Still overkill, IMO.

It is useful to learn the "ideal" build order that you should only use when you are certain no one will attack you for 100 turns. (Feel free to correct me if you think you have a better order.)

Towns 1-2
Warrior
Warrior
Granary (you should research Pottery if you don't start with it)
Settlers/Workers as needed

Towns 3-5
Warrior
Warrior
Barracks
Military units

Towns 6+
Culture buildings

At turn 100 you sneak attack your nearest neighbor.

But on deity you will always be attacked before 100 turns if you use this build order. So you need to modify it by building a few settlers/workers before the granary, and building a few military units before the barracks. The trick is to modify it just enough to stay alive, for maximum efficiency.

My first 15 to 20 minutes is only a few turns, you really should slow down and reassess everything every turn. Little mistakes and missed opportunities quickly add up, and at the beginning they become exponential in nature.

Regarding build order, DaveMcW pretty much sums up what I do for an 'optimal' start. At least up to city 6, I don't really bother with culture unless I am religous.

[sniff] I now almost always build 4 warriors/scouts in my first city, Before going settler or granary (granary only if 5 extra food available). This give me early exploring parties and then 2 warriors are drawn back in time for MP for the bigger builds.

Hmm, thinking about it I will build more than 2 warriors if the tiles are poor and food surplus is only 2 per turn.

Sorry Renata yes the msg was ment for tao
