I wasn't sure if this belonged in Computer Talk or here, but since this is a Civ III-specific area, here goes:

I may be upgrading computers soon and I'm curious if anyone knows how well C3C plays on Vista. I like XP, I'm comfortable with it and it seems stable. Please bear in mind that I'm a computer user, not a programmer. I've looked at a few articles comparing XP and Vista, but they've been totally unintelligible to me. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dont upgrade to Vista, it is way too unstable still. I would wait until next year, keep XP for now.

FIXED!

Just installed Civ 3 Conq under Windows Vista; the old screen resolution I was comfortable with just didn't work--and no amount of changes into my target line, nore instructions added into my Conquests.ini file made any difference. It was as if Vista was IGNORING my .ini file, and instructions in my alias' target command line. I'd tried everything.

I had becomed accustomed to playing the game at 1600x1200. I just couldn't go back.

THE FIX UNDER VISTA:

Right click on the application (Civ3 Conquests), and click on "Run this program as an administrator"
Your previous screen resolution will then display, assuming you have made the correct entries in your Conquests.ini file.

:D

Hi, Im glad things worked out for you. Could you tell me why Its good to have 1600x1200? I may try it myslef. Im not a pro with paintshop or visual models. What are the benifts to having it set so high? Is it better details on units and terrain?! WHat anout more view of the map so I have to zoom out less?

Ether of these are good incentives to try it.
Thanks for any info you can share

General Vista question: do you always have to choose "Run this program as an administrator" for lots of programs? Does it default to this if you log on as an administrator? Or is there a check box in the program options, like the "Run in MS-DOS Mode" option some programs have in 98?

I don't want to give up the quick old double-clicking!

I often play C3C with a couple of friends, and now one of them upgraded to Vista recently. Before that, we did not have any problems using voice chat, but now the vista machine refuses to allo voice chat. I hoped the trick you introduced above would solve the problem, but it didn't.

It seems like Vista is just ignoring the voice chat section of the ini file, while changing the resolution in the same ini file DOES work. Has anybody else had this experience in Vista? What did you do against it??

Regards,
Erik.
