I have had Civ V since it's initial launch. I have been a fan of Civ since the first one. My opinion on 5? Well, it has grown on me in single player. But I usually play MP Civ with my brother, my dad and me on a team vs several other computer teams. Ever since the start we had a lot of the out of sync errors and we waited patiently for patches to be released to "fix" that issue. I get everything up to date through steam, and on one of the more recent patches it even stated "fixed out of sync errors" so I was thinking to myself "thank god! Now I can play the game through!"

What kept happening is after about four or five hours into the game, or right about the time we are getting gunpowder (we play on epic timelines) there won't be an out of sync error anymore...instead the game starts to lag on the turns and will then unceremoniously disconnect one of the three of us or all of us from whoever is running host. We don't have wimp computers either. If we reload and try again, it will NEVER get past that turn before it will disconnect someone. We have used hard lines, as well as our wireless when we are all in the same room. Its like clockwork. You can imagine our frustration after dumping SO many hours into a game to find out, you just cant FINISH it. So then another patch comes promising fixes and we try AGAIN to start a game over and get burned again. I have looked over the net and have not seen any complaints of the exact same issues...I have seen lots of complaints about the out of sync stuff but this particular one I have not. It makes me wonder, has anyone else FINISHED a game in MP? From my point of view it seems people are...but for some reason we still have the same issues time and time again...does anyone have any insight? Do I have too many players on the map? Are there certain settings you have to make sure are a certain way to prevent this from happening? Anyone else had this sort of luck? Thanks.

Because you are playing with AI that is what is going to get worse and worse as the game goes on. All the AI civs, City states, and unit moving(unit pathfinding code) around is all processed at the end of the turns. As all the civs get larger and there are more decisions to be made and more units to move this will get worse. And the AI code is not multi-threaded, a limitation of the lua language I believe. So all those extra cores on our high end CPU's are not doing anything to help with the end turn lag.

The Civ5 graphics sub system is also very demanding, have a read of this article by Anandtech on Civ5. http://www.civplayers.com/index.php?section=smf&topic=9586.0

So the more tiles and units you have to render as the game goes on the more demanding this will be on your graphics system.

This is why those of us that play online MP don't play with AI or CS, and keep the maps down to a size that is just right for the number of players, not too big.

We keep getting disconnected from the very beginning of the game. About every 10 turns or so.

We play LAN games with 2 humans and several AI's. We used to play all the time and haven't had these issues but we haven't played for a while now up until a couple days ago.

One of the latest patches must have broken something.
