Carriers and Dest/Carriers take first hit

I encounted a stack of three destroyers and one carrier. All have no damage and are veteran.

When I attacked the stack, the carrier was the first unit in combat.

This is similar to the Galleon/Frigate situation when a Galleon will rotate to the top of a stack after unloading its units. Galleons and Frigates both defend at 2 and the combat parameters are not giving priority to the frigate to be the first ship attacked over the galleon. (Frigate being an escorting warship, galleon being a transport).

Destroyers and Carriers both defend at 8. Carriers may launch aircraft during their previous turn. I am assuming that carriers are moving to the top of the stack due to the "unloading" or activity of the aircraft they carry.

Do you have a game save?

When I attacked a transport and two destroyers in a stack with a submarine, I was asked "which unit do you want to attack?"

Naturally, I chose the transport, and then legged it.:)

That's because the submarine now has the stealth ability, i.e possibility to choose your target when you attack a pile.

Thanks. How do you find these things out, apart from trial and error?
There was no manual with my game.

If Destroyers and Carriers have the same defense, wouldn't it actually be good sense for the AI to let a Carrier take the brunt of the attack, especially if it's no longer carrying any cargo? After all, if it's certain that one defending unit will be destroyed, it may as well be one that can't attack the enemy on the next turn, right? Sure, the Carrier is much more expensive, but if it's defenders die, it will die too anyway, so not much point sacrificing the defending units either.

The same goes for the Galleon/Frigate situation.

.. Or am I missing something? :)
