Just wondering, what are the little icons next to religion tand all those things in a city panel? I'm talking about the grey stars and the hammer/gold/research icons.

They indicate which city is your best in that category. For instance beaker for highest beaker output, hammer for highest production, shillings for highest gold output etc. I am however curious about the less obvious gray star, and the black hourglass which is on most cities....

The gray star means the city has a palace in it, but is not a capital. Atleast in my experience. If you lose your capital, this city will become your next capital

Isn't that a castle wall (like a rook)?:)

Rook, hour glass, whatever .. at that scale who's to tell! Rook makes sense though if its for cities with a defensive bonus. But I can say I know it's not representing walls or castles... I rarely bother building either.

its the defense bonus through culture or buildings. only the higher one applies. the grey star indicates a secondary palace.
