Civ4 crashes when trying to save after playing a while (using latest patch)

I downloaded and installed the latest patch, and while it seems to have made the game a bit more stable I still get CTD when trying to save (or sometimes when auto saving).

This seems to appear when having played for a while, and only on really large maps (such as earth)

When crashing, I used to get a CTD. With the patch I get a CTD but also the error message: "memory allocation failure - exiting program. Reason: bad allocation, File:.\CvAppMainLoop.cpp Line: 261"

I've included the save file at http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/AutoSave_AD-1738.Civ4SavedGame and when I played it I got a crash at 1744, but the save game might have to run a bit longer to trigger the bug.

Also, the game seems to be a bit slower with the patch, and starting up (after loading) takes quite some time.

For the record; the game in question has used the worldeditor a few times to test some things out.

lemme guess, savegame is 1395 Kb eh? :)

Actually, the savegame I uploaded is 592 KB.

When crashing, the game starts to create a save file, which leaves me with a corrupt save file that is 2 KB.

This sounds like the usual CTD everyone is experiencing when the map is large and the game has entered the mid/later stages. It happens a lot when saving since that tasks the system more. If you get into these periods where things seem to slow down and saving causes CTD chances are doing *anything* to tax your memory will cause a CTD. Try for example going to world builder mode and zooming out to maximum globe view really fast.

Yeah there seems to be major memory issues with the game (see memory leak thread - although it's not about a leak!!)
It seems to affect computers in different ways - my PC has a very similar issue to yours when the game hunts for any more available memory near end game.
On my PC it actually takes out the I-O addressing to do with all my drives. Suddenly my PC can't find any drive (including the OS drive) and has a fit.
Not saving the game is the least of my issues.

Luckily I can CTL-ALT-DEL and go into task manager. Doing that seems to grab back my I-O addressing and all my drives come back (With the game still active) I can then ALT-TAB back and quick save my game.
I need to exit it then and reboot as about 10 seconds later it will CTD.

There is some good work going on in the other thread towards a user made patch to fix the nightmare memory flooding thats going on.

I got the following error as well trying to save my game. See attached Pic.

I had just started CIV4, loaded a previous saved game and then took 1 turn, built parthenon wonder, saved the game(I save a lot these days) and boom. Never had this specific crash before the patch.
