This thread will be used to provide information up to turn 75.
What did you choose for a goal and why.
How did you expand?
Did you fight anyone?
What did you do for diplomacy?
What did you research?
What Civic Tree did you choose?
What else did you do? :)

1. No specific goal. I just went for general expansion.
2. I have 2 cities and 2 towns, and am gearing up for a war to take more,
3. No fights yet. I just unlocked legions and have created a second legate.
4. Everyone hates me. Which is fine, as they are all going to be Roman subjects soon enough
5. I have all my Roman civics done am just about finished with the bronze working mastery
6, I did the basic 2 civics and then concentrated on Roman ones exclusively
7. I rushed a pantheon to get god of the sea to make up for the horrible production in this start location. I also upgraded a town to a second city in the west in a mining rich area sooner than I normally would have so I could actually build things. My other towns are up north, particularly around the natural wonder. I have nearly completed 2 full armies and a second wonder. No victory points yet, but I am close to the first point on all tracks.

I forgot to stop at turn 75, so my report and screenshot is from turn 91, my apologies.

-What did you choose for a goal and why.
In terms of legacy path, I followed no specific goal, since most of the milestones in Antiquity will come naturally anyway. Maybe I'll try a cultural golden age for eternal Amphitheaters (we're Augustus after all ;)).
In general, I tried to get as much towns online as fast as possible due to Augustus' Imperium Maius unique ability and due to the fact that the starting position was weak in production.

-How did you expand?
I moved the founder up the Tiber river NW and settled there to speed up growth with the convenient Hoerikwaggo wonder nearby. I prioritized pumping out settlers in Roma and founded Neapolis next in the west on the coast of the Mahakam navigable river, so I could maximize the usage of the juicy natural wonder tiles. After that I tried to forward settle a little bit to the south (in Friedrich's direction) and founded Ostia at the silver/sheep/marble south of the coastal lake.

-Did you fight anyone?
Yes, I decided very early to declare on Ashoka, since he did a complete ridiculous forward settle of Suvarnagiri 3 tiles north of Neapolis - unacceptable! (on that note, I really missed the AI mod (https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/artificially-intelligent-ai-mod.31881/) which I was using the last days and which prevents those stupid cases of AI forward settling. I disabled that mod for the GOTM, of course).
But before I could capture that town, I had to deal with the hostile IPs from Longcheng in the north and struggled a little bit due to my neglecting of building military units. And right after that, Friedrich also declared on me and threatened Ostia, but only sent 2 units which posed no threat and I quickly made peace with him again. By then I had a nice little army, declared on Ashoka and took his stupid forward-settle town.

-What did you do for diplomacy?
Not much to be honest, since I went to war quite soon with both my neighbors. I also don't fully understand how the penalties work when the AI is settling near to another(!) capital, since that also had a huge negative impact on my relations with Friedrich, although it was not my capital that he settled near..? And then he could just declare on me since our relation was bad already without anything happen between us.
With Xerxes/Lafayette I had the usual food/culture/gold endeavors.

-What did you research?
Research was (and still is) slow for me - I went writing first, but then had no good spots for the library and delayed it for quite some time, which was probably a mistake. Next was Bronze Working for my Legions and then Masonry for Monuments and Adjacency boni for my Basilicas.

-What Civic Tree did you choose?
Always Mysticism first for the Pantheon - I chose God of the Sun, because City Patron (which I always like for the influence) was already taken by Ashoka. I had to go for Discipline next, since the first wars/fights were already on the horizon. Then I started with the Roman civics to unlock my forum quarters. The forum also makes adjacency calculations quite more complicated due to the adjacency boni of Basilica and Temple of Jupiter. In Roma, I found a nice spot south of the natural wonder and adjacent to a happiness/culture quarter with Altar/Monument.
I also prioritized the 2 other roman civics for additional towns and the Colosseum.

-What else did you do? :)
I upgraded Neapolis to a city, founded a fourth town north of Roma, and I'm currently at 6 settlements (captured Ashoka town plus I incorporated the Arna IPs).
After the wars, I wandered the continent with my army to fight with IPs and upgrade my commander. The only hostile IP that was left was in the far west at the Han river. I dispersed it and will probably found my 7th settlement with my Legatus there (that is proper forward settling! :D) I also intend to incorporate Longcheng before the Age ends, or I settle another town in the vicinity of Ostia, we'll see.

Fun game so far with a lot more action than expected :goodjob:

- What did you choose for a goal and why?
My initial goal was going for a cultural victory but has not done much to achieve it yet. There is still time though. Another goal is to use my legions to take a city or two before the age ends!

How did you expand?
Peaceful expansion so far, five settlements (2 citys, 3 towns) at the moment, one founded with the leagtus-ability. All of them pretty close in the surroundings of Roma.

Did you fight anyone?
Not yet but a war against Freidrich is on the horizon pretty soon for one or two more settlements. He does not like me and the feeling is mutual!

What did you do for diplomacy?
Not much. I let the others com to me and accepted some deals and rejected some. So far friendly relations with Ashoka since he stayed in his corner so far. We are even allies at the moment. More hostile towards Friedrich. Probably because our borders are pretty close! The other leaders is quite far away and our relations is decent with some agreements here and there.

What did you research?
No real strategy here. Took what I needed for the moment. But early writing since research is low and of course Bronze Working for legions.

What Civic Tree did you choose?
Of course Mysticism for pantheon (God of the Sun) and disciplin for the free Legatus. A goal was to promote him to level 3 through battles against Longcheng in the North and then use him to settle a new town. After that I went for the Roman Civics mostly!

What else did you do?
Not much more to report. I seem to be ahead in Culture and not to far behind in science at the moment. Good happiness too. Economy can be better though! Time to start building wonders soon for the Cultural path.

Summary
I like the game very much. Nice map to play so far. Long time lurker on the Gotm-forums but this is my first but hopefully not last post. Played Civ for many years but call myself a pretty bad but very eager player! I am not very good at uploading screenshots so that might come later. I know how to take them in Steam but not where to find them in the library and attach it here. Maybe I will learn some day :)

Peaceful expansion, only fought city states to level up Legatus. Focused on increasing production in Rome to pump out things faster. Rushed Hanging Garden which I think is one of the most powerful wonder in the game. Also build Terracotta Army but is probably not very useful here, AI gets this wonder much sooner on higher levels, but just doing this for fun. Almost finished with the last Rome specific Civic to get one more city capacity. 2 cities 3 towns. Currently have 2 Legatus carrying 10 units (6 archers 4 Legions) to go after Ashoka. War will be mostly for leveling up Legatus since there is no city capacity. Befrided Commerce city state asap to get the 4 hammer bonus, befriending another science state to get a free tech later. Grabbed good land so far with resource clusters, can go for any vic.

Gameplan:
Augustus has his 50% discount on towns coupled with other roman bonuses for towns. We will therefore try to expand fast and up or above the limit. Gold has much better value than I usually give it with this leader.
With all the culture bonuses of Augustus and Rome we will probably race through the civics.
Goal is to get as many legacy path progress as I can.

Turn1: I didn't see it from the screenshot, there is actually a nice wonder there but not a lot of hammers around. We forego the fresh water (it's really not that important in civ7) and move next to it to use it. But we need to be careful, it's only food and we need early hammers to be able to pump settlers (or to do anything really). The food/culture can be perfectly used by towns so we will work only one tile and then select prod tiles. The surroundings are a mix bag of tiles, a lot of forest and a few roughs. Stone circles is probably still the best Pantheon though and we have 6 mines so not too bad => Pottery (brickyard) followed by AH+Masonry it is then.
1739505060638.png

Turn 10: After a few turn into a granary we switch to the brickyard.
Turn 12: We got quite a bit of gold from goody huts, we buy a settler. We get quite a bit of endeavours from AI but we only accept as I want something good like science or an independent power. We get a science endeavour from Friedrich on T14.
Turn 16: We settle Aquilea on the other side of the mountain to use it as a food town
1739506694752.png

Goody Huts: Free warrior, 20 Food, 75 gold, 50 food, 50G + 50Hap, 20F + 50G, 15Ham,
Turn 20: Parthenon => Stone circles.
Turn 23: Befriending La Venta
Turn 25 Get Masonry Turn 27 Altar finished in Rome leading to a 27 prod city on turn 27 🙃
Turn 26: We settle Capua in the south, a potentially strong production city. We get some sheep too.
Turn 28: Firaxis needs to fix this crazy ass forward settling
1739508090441.png

T31: Friedrich denounces us
T32: Aquilea is big enough to feed Rome
T33: Settle Puteoli next to the gold for more juicy gold value. The AI lost Kausambi to barbs
1739509168758.png

T38: We start befriending Vyadhapura. We have a merchant I cant use because the AI sucks. He will make a route between 2 settlements later on.
T40: We settle Neapolis for the salt + iron + sheep. Should be another good food town.
T48: Roma built the Great Stele and we raze some IP up north. We are getting through the roman civics quite fast grabbing these +1 settlements. We are slowly researching bronze working (science sucks, no AI is giving us the science endeavour anymore).
T54: Roma built the Hanging Gardens. We convert Capua to a city and start building Petra. It seems we should also be able to get Pyramids here since no AI has built it yet (it has high constraints so it could be the AI has no wonder city for it).
T64: We finish the unique quarter in Roma
T66: BW is finish, we upgrade our warriors and start making a few legions + archers
T71: Petra finishes, moving on to Pyramids.
T75: We are now ready to attack Ashoka.
=> We have 3 wonders with 2 underway, both Roma and Capua are 40+ hammers.
=> We have 6 cities with plan to capture at least 2.
=> We have 3 codices, hopefully starting to race through the science track
=> We are low on resources but with plans for more

I popped my head in this thread at Turn 50, but saw we were aiming for 75, so ducked out again! One benefit of working from home is being able to squeeze some Civ into my lunchbreak, so here is where the game stands at Turn 84 (I needed to conclude a... military operation).

This is only my second game, so using this as a learning experience as much as anything.

What did you choose for a goal and why? Aiming to get as many legacy points in antiquity as possible.
How did you expand? Prioritised food to get to pop 5, then sent some settlers out to found some Roman towns along rivers to grab some resources
Did you fight anyone? Ashoka declared war around Turn 70, I saw it coming a mile off. I had suzerainty over the Xiongnu so purchased some cheap Foederati to bolster my forces, and managed to nab two of his closest settlements.
What did you do for diplomacy? I prioritised suzerainty over the two northern independents over endeavours. Generally trying to be friendly and agree to endeavours otherwise.
What did you research? Prioritised shipbuilding and mysticism, but have really underused fishing boats and altars so far.
What Civic Tree did you choose? Oligarchy for food and production. I've now got most of the Roman civics slotted in.
What else did you do? Built the Hanging Gardens and Gate of All Nations as they seem like useful wonders and count towards the culture legacy. 2 Codices. 2 Captured Towns.

Thanks for setting this game up. I played through the first age. Took one city from the AI up north and one down south but generally regarded the performance as unsatisfactory, primarily due to bad science. I'll read what people here did, hoping to get some pointers.

What did you choose for a goal and why.
I tried to focus on military and science but I have mixed feelings if I was really able to do that.

How did you expand?
Focusing on conquering AI settlements, but only got one in so far. I am on turn 75.

Did you fight anyone?
Yes, Friedrich - Egypt.. he offered me one city when I defeated his army.. I accepted to focus a war with Ashoka - Maurya, and I am about to attack him.

What did you do for diplomacy?
Tried to do diplomacy with Xerxes and Lafayette but it seems Lafayette got crashed by Xerxes so far.

What did you research?
Tried to focus on getting writting 1, 2 and bronze working... Friedrich already had bronze working in the war, but I was able to still defeat using slinders vs archers.

What Civic Tree did you choose?
Military to get additional bonus in war.

What else did you do? :)
Built Pyramids and Gate of All nations

This is my first GOTM so be kind!
This thread will be used to provide information up to turn 75. Oops, I am at turn 84! I will just go up to 75 in this report tho!
What did you choose for a goal and why. Silk roads, because I thought I would be friendly to my neighbor's
How did you expand? I settled Rome right at the starting point. I then settled another two cities to the NW and S of the natural wonder. I incorporated Arna and then built three more towns around Rome.
Did you fight anyone? Frederich declared on me and almost conquered my 3rd and 5th settlements. He did kill my Legatus.
What did you do for diplomacy? I formed an alliance with Ashoka
What did you research? I have been all over the place!
What Civic Tree did you choose? I went for the Roman one so far.
What else did you do? :) I am building up a counter attack against Freddy. He has some crappy city placements so I think I am going to just take the war hit and raze one of them!

I'm just about to end Turn 75.

What did you choose for a goal and why: I decided to aim for a military victory, with culture as a secondary goal for the antiquity period. I normally go for a 1-for-1 ratio of towns to cities, but decided I would do 2 towns for 1 city because of Auguste's bonuses (it's my first time playing him).

War is going on on two fronts: Ashoka is about to lose his capital (I already captured one of his two fortified districts, and he's out of units), and I'll go finish his second town right after (I'm attacking with two Legatus leading 3 archers and 3 legions, I lost the 4th archer and legion in the early rounds of the war). While I was moving my army toward the west where Ashoka was settled, Frederic denounced me. I was able to force him to accept not attacking me, but my empty town was too tempting, so he declared war, giving me a +6 war bonus against him. I was able to divert my reinforcements who were coming along the Rubicon river and my legions quickly destroyed his troups. I should be able to get two more towns out of him, and will have to see if I can take his capital.

How did you expand: I started exploring north and west, as I wanted to find the best spots around the natural wonder. Upon meeting Arna, I decided to become their king, and tagged Longcheng for elimination. The fight against Longcheng took longer than anticipated, especially as it started spawning ships. I got a lucky find of an Archer for 50 gold way before Bronze Working was available, and it helped me finally deal with Longcheng. Ashoka and Frederic quickly settled in my direction, and I seem to have good relationships with La Fayette, whose empire was only found around turn 60 or so when my ship went south. I just recently discovered Xerxès; one player was eliminated (probably on the other continent), so I expect to find only one or two players there in the Exploration age.

Did you fight anyone: Longcheng, then Ashoka and Frederic. I was attacked by a few more independant powers (Vyadhapura, which I've now become king of, and Su Nuraxi, that I'm also about to become king of).

What did you do for diplomacy: I was prudent in hoarding my influence and kept most of it for befriending independant powers. I only supported one offer of a festival from La Fayette, and although I was taken by surprise when Frederic denounced me right after I had spent my influence to denounce Ashoka, it turned out well when he declared while under a treaty to not attack me.

What did you research: I thought I could avoid Navigation, but had to prioritise soon to get a shot at some discoverable location on water. I then went for Education and Bronze Working. Currently researching the Wheel to round up my armies.

What Civic Tree did you choose: I went for Discipline first for the free Legatus, and then prioritized the roman civics. I see many players went early for Mysticism, but I've not built a lot of buildings yet, and am not sure I would have found time for a temple anyway. I've also struggled to generate gold, and most of it went for upgrading my units (I got a lucky narrative choice that gave me 300 gold, allowing me to finish upgrading my second wave of troops and get sufficient pressure in my assault against Ashoka).

What else did you do: I've managed to put my library between the camels and ivory. I'm hoping to place my culture buildings close to the natural wonder. This is the first game where I'm trying to do some planning for my districts to maximise adjacency bonuses rather than just placing them on the closest available spot. I'm also being more aggressive in replacing rural districts with urban ones.

As nice as it is to set our own objectives, I think the organisers of the game should decide what victory players should aim for at the end of the modern age. The game should last all 3 ages and not be restricted to a single age.

What did you choose for a goal and why.
My goal is to kill neighbours, because I thought it would slow down era progress. Strangely, it is 58% now, I suppose very high for this level of difficulty And all my scouts are dead far too soon

How did you expand?
Very low hammers on capital means I spent gold for both settlers. Both went north. I did not settle more as I want to conquer, so now I am pretty pityful 4 settlements only.

Did you fight anyone?
Ashoka is dead. Wilhelm is soon to be killed, I just have some troops on borders :D I want his cities, at least 2 I can see (navigable rivers)

What did you do for diplomacy?
I ignored both neighbours in terms of friendly meeting, I wanted however friendly meeting with Xerxes, but no influence left :( Anyway, I allied northern military state and LaVenta for farming techs. Soon the other military state would be allied and hopefully I get monoliths from any cultural

What did you research?
I am very behind in techs, just researched bronze working :(

What Civic Tree did you choose?
Basically belining city cap

What else did you do?
I went for production on mines pantheon, I got pyramids, soon to finish stele to have cash to upgrade units.
I razed Ashoka's expansions, as they were not on navigable rivers and something tells me Songhai is coming next era, as I would not be able probably to unlock Shawnee

Yep. 25 points.
Whoops! I thought it contributes only to expansion legacy via doubled city value. Nice to know!

I'll base this report on my manual saves. I'll try to save more often in the future if doing a GOTM.

Initial plans are to complete the Economic Legacy Paths in all three ages, as it's the only one I haven't done yet.

Turn 1 - I followed the game recommendation to move 1 NW. This way I could better use the mountains and the Hoerikwaggo. But the site was going to be lacking production.
Turn 22 - Three scout start. I prioritized Mysticism to get a good Pantheon. Fertility Rights was already taken, I took City Patron Goddess for the influence. Rome is size 6 with my first settler 2 turns away. Not the quickest of starts. Starting making friends with Arna, planned to fight Longchen for the experience.
Turn 39 - I was forward settled hard by Ashoka. I saw no solution other than going to war. Changed plans and started befriending Longchen. Have two towns now. Pudanagala was going to have to be razed as it intruded into Ostia's territory.
Turn 64 - War with Ashoka is over. Razed Pudanagala, took Taksasila, and was gifted Girinagara in the peace talks. Have just 1 milestone so far, military. Girinagara is not in my trade network, not sure what to do about that. Settled one more town myself. One over the settlement limit, need to raise that. My southern towns are starting to make Friedrich mad, I don't see how I'm going to avoid a war with him. Still don't have legions, production in capital and science are not going well. Getting into bad relations because of leader agenda. Looked in -pedia and couldn't find it there. I have just discovered that it is available in game, the fourth tab (head profile with the ?) I'm lowest in science and happiness, best in culture
Turn 98 - Going to put this under a spoiler as it goes past 75.
Spoiler :

Got into several wars. Ashoka would declare and not do much, still got another town from him in peace deals. I tried to get Waset from Frederick, but it was a tough nut with all the rivers surrounding it. Ended up taking Djedet in the peace. I've maxed out military legacy and am ok with the town limit. Still worst in science, but happiness is better. Plans are to get some codices both for the legacy and to increase science. I'll try to max out economics also. I've befriended 3 more independent powers, but lost my last scout due to all the hostile forces. I'll send a legion to try to finish exploration. Girinagara is now within my trading network. At the time I didn't know why, but now I think it's because I have a fishing quay in both Girinagara and Ostia connecting them by sea.

All my settlements are still towns, I need to take a close look and create a couple of cities, and specialize the other towns. 66%, the first phase of the crisis is not too far off.

What did you choose for a goal and why.
I thought I'd lean more into soft power via influence, besides, when I saw that marble and elephants nearby, I felt a light wonder fever taking me over.

How did you expand?
Settled on the source of the small river, to have a couple of high food tiles from the natural wonder.
First settler SW to claim that marble, silver and sheep with a small town, then I wanted to plant another settlement NW, but Ashoka forward settled there, so I directed my settler N to claim kaolin, jade and iron, but, of course, hostile IP Longcheng sent a warrior to sit on the spot, and while my warrior and Legatus were picking some xp and waiting Longcheng to turn friendly, I noticed that Ashokas forward settlement was no more, probably another IP took them out, very much appreciated, saved me an early war. I redirected my settler there, then third settler went north again, with Longcheng appeased.

Did you fight anyone?
Not yet, not for real, just a minor skirmish with an IP, waiting for them to be pacified.

What did you do for diplomacy?
Became Suzerain in both northern IPs: military Longcheng that was hostile and needed 170+100 infl investment to speed things up, and cultural Arna that was friendly to begin with and only needed 170 infl. Rest of the influence went into some endeavours with Lafayette and Xerxes.
I chose neutral greetings with everyone, as I was saving infl for IPs, and Friedrich denounced me, to which I said ok. He sent three warriors to my SW expansion, but with a gifted warrior from Longcheng, I had a full army of 3 warriors and 1 slinger with Legatus in command to meet them , so they just had a refreshing swim in the river and turned back, with no DoW.

What did you research?
First went for Irrigation (Hanging Gardens), then Masonry (Monument, Pyramids), then Writing+Mastery (tech stealing), now the Wheel (Villa), hunting for influence.

What Civic Tree did you choose?
Done Mysticism, Discipline+Mastery, all Roman civics - Mastery, Tactics, now Organized Military, then will go CoL, maybe should have fit that in a bit earlier, but as there were two potential wars, I thought I'd have some military options as well.

What else did you do
3 scouts explored most of the Old World, 5th settlement settler SWW ready to settle future 3rd city with little resources but a lot of space for possible next capital, a spy sent to Friedrich to steal some tech, I'll see what he fetches.

Btw., thanks GOTM Staff for this! I wasn't expecting GOTMs starting so soon, almost missed it. I hope, I'll finish Antiquity until the new patch drops.

I didn’t realize there would be a ‘mid-age’ report, so I didn’t get a clean save at turn 75, I just finished the Antiquity age today and came on the forums, and saw this thread. I will keep spoilers out until the full Antiquity thread.

  • What did you choose for a goal and why? I’m getting a late start on this one, but I have played a couple of full games so far, one starting as Rome (but with Napoleon). I like the Legatus, and my initial thoughts are to go for the Military path (what’s Rome without an Empire!). Train my military against some independent powers and take out an early neighbor. Use the Legatus’ ability to found an extra settlement or two, so I can build an earlier military and maybe 1-2 less settlers. As for the other paths, early expansion seems like it gets plenty of resources, I think I hit the Economic GA tier in both of my first two games. I will definitely build the Colossus and another 1 or 2 wonders, but they won’t be my focus, and I should be able to get enough codices from Mastery techs toward the end of Antiquity to get the 2nd tier.
  • How did you expand? Got off to a slow start, settled 1NW to pick up an extra Natural Wonder hex and some trees for production but still seemed slow. First settler was around turn 30, settled North toward Longcheng, then two more West (other side of the Wonder) and South along the river, so I had 4 settlements by turn 50.
  • Did you fight anyone? Longcheng put up a bigger fight than I expected, first game on Sovereign probably didn’t help, but also they had a couple galleys that wore my units down, I had to pull back and heal before I could finish them off and disperse. Then I went south after LaVenta. I didn’t realize Friedrich was befriending them, so that led to my first major war – I saw he turned hostile, but he also apparently decided that was a good time to send an unescorted settler right in front of my army.... :crazyeye:
  • GOTM1_A67_SettlerBait.jpg
It was a much tougher war than I expected. He had a lot of units, and even though I kept positive War Support, the Sovereign bonus was noticeable (my last game was Viceroy). But I’ll save the details for the next forum, the war didn’t really get going until after turn 75.

  • What did you do for diplomacy? I actually had been working on good relations with Friedrich, he was the first one I met. I befriended Arna up north, and Taruga to the south, both Cultural. Ashoka was love at first sight (from him), he stayed super positive. I ended up allying with LaFayette (he was also fighting Friedrich). Napoleon (Maya) was the one I initially thought I would fight, but his cities were too far away.
  • What did you research? I started Animal Husbandry to get some production going, but I think I was distracted with the natural wonder and went for Monument before coming back for Library so it seemed like I was always behind (and the advisor kept telling me I was too!). Here’s a snapshot at turn 49, I was doing well in Culture but falling behind in science. After doubling back for Library I went for Bronze Working to support my military strategy. I delayed Sailing for a long time, probably should have picked that up sooner to boost growth in Roma.
  • GOTM1_A49_Compare.jpg

  • What Civic Tree did you choose? Started with Discipline to get the Legatus, then Mysticism, then the Roman civics before coming back for the main civics. I ended up with God of the Sun, and bought Altars in all my towns.
  • What else did you do? I built the Pyramid in Roma, good fit for the terrain. I planned my districts in Roma, but did not do a good job of identifying which towns would eventually become cities and saving a good tile for the Roman unique quarter when I did upgrade Patavium.

This is a lot of fun, I haven’t played GOTM in years, I played GOTM a lot with Civ 3 and 4, I played Civ 5 and 6 but not as much, went back to grad school late in life. Now I have more free time and looking forward to getting back into Civ again!
