"Civilization 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Freshly installed - patched and everything.

The loading screen appears, flicks away and I get this message (the standard Windows error message)

"Sid Meier's Civilization 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Why?! Another thing - you know all the shortcut folders which I think (correct me) contain the INI files? I try to open them but it says windows is searching for specific files!

Please help.

Ps. My computer easier meets the specs.

Can anyone help me with this? I guess you need more information - but what, sorry I'm a newbie to these Tech forums (never really have problems with games...until now )
