Civilization II: Number Three Game of All Time!

Flipping through my April 2005 edition of PC Gamer (the Easter Bunny gave it to me ;) ) I saw that they re-did the 50 greatest games of all time. Going through, I was like, "Interesting... Never heard of it... How'd that get there?!..." When I came to the top 10, I saw some familiar graphics up front and saw Civ II in the number three spot, only behind Doom and Half-Life. Glad to know our little game is still kicking some serious butt! :D
 
Doom and Half Life?...bah...good titles but not even in the same league as Civ2.

How many folks are still playing the original Doom or Half Life?...Civ2 is almost like Pong as far as modern graphics and goodies are concerned,yet people still play....

Well, I still play Doom from time to time, but nowhere near the amount that I still play Civ II. The only other game to compare with the amount of time I've spent on it would have to be StarCraft. No other games come close. Civ II and StarCraft: what a combo!
 
Man, this news was good enough to bring Smash out of hiding!

This is definitely great news. Now all I need to do is get back into the game more...

Actually graphics *is* imporatant, after all its Civ2 not Civ ORIGINAL thats on that list. And Civ 2 is *basically* a spruced up version of Civ Original.

You seem to be forgetting about the combat system--in Civ1 it was all or nothing, and a Phalanx could beat a Battleship (OK, granted, it is rare, but it is very annoying).

Er... I don't know about doom, but there are tons of people that still play half-life. And its a lot more then still play civ 2.

Thats the stats of people playing half-life / its mods (obviously, ignore half-life 2 and counterstrike: source). Half-life is definitly in the same leauge as civ, hell... its probably better.
 
only third? but i guess theres lots of games out there.. yeah, third is amazing actually! but i havent even heard about the other two above it on the list (mabye its just since about the only thing i play is civ one or two)

:lol: I was laughin insanely when I heard this, and then thought "Jeez, he isn't joking!"

I agree with that standing. Half Life and Doom are the best games around, not counting the other half life/dooms. BTW, which one was #1? I believe it was (or should have been) Half Life.

I still play it. They're are better than Civ2. Way better.

Thats my OPINION.
 
I've never played Doom and never even heard of Half-Life. But then again I've had SMAC for about three years and have yet to open the box. Finally worked my way up to HMM3, and still playing MOO2 & CivII.

Part of the aspect of a great game is re-playability & clearly Civ II has that.
 
Doom is an awesome game in itself, but I have never played Half-Life. I'm not too sure whether or not Doom is a better game than Civ II. But it did indeed revolutionize its genre of game. First person shooters were never the same post Doom.

Well Doom earns its place, so does HL. Doom, just for being first great 3d shooting game and HL with great movie like plot and easy to make mods with it (CS is that popular or what?)

But Civ2 is perhaps gretest Civ in series. So it's quite shame that they ripped allmost all the good things from Civ2 when they did Civ3. :mad:

Edit: Oops sorry, said allmost the same thing than RegentMan :(
 
civ 2 is a great game, I keep coming back to it after many months of doing other stuff
