Your system is excellent. It is more than recommended requirement actually (far far better than minimum requirement).

There are a lot culprit you can try to solve. Hardware and Software.

For Hardware, try to open your case during the game. Your case (even have 3 fans) may not have enough fresh/cold air to circulate. And, the x800 is produce quite amount of hot air too. Heatsink may not properly seated at athlon core. etc., etc.

For software, install the latest driver may help. Do cleaning first with Driver Cleaner Pro (do google on it). Install the latest patch v1.61 of Civ4 may help (or, if you have installed Warlords, you already have the latest patch.

Check the CPU, GPU, case temperatures may help you too.

I agree with Arto, check your system temps. - I have noticed that my systems fans have to run alot harder in civ4 then any other game, including things like quake 4.

thanks for the info, i dont think its a heat issue since my casing is perforrated all over(like running w/o casing) my temps are 42-46 C while gaming, uhmmm i am using the ver 1.09 patch though, could this be an issue? i have benn searching all over the web about this and crashes seem to be very common

thanks

Like Crunch say, use the latest patch v1.61. Or, buy and install warlords expansion. It contains patch v1.61.

Let us know the result.

installed patch ver 1.52 and still crashed, but my friend just upped my ram voltages by .1 and now it runs like a charm, seems that ram voltages at 2.5 wasnt enough and at 2.6 it runs GREAT now, but i'm still gonna dl the 1.61 patch, whats the diff btw with 1.52?

thanks for all the input

I am also having a problem with CIV IV crashing my computer. I can't hardly play the game for five minutes before the whole thing completely shuts off - total uncontrolled instant power down. I'm quite sure I more than meet the minimum system requirements (see the attachement with complete info) and I am using the 1.61 patch with the regular version of Civ IV. My internal temp. (while I don't have any way of viewing the temperature) is quite cool by touch with plenty of ventilation (2 fans and one side of my casing is actually off). I'm not quite elite enough to know how to "up my ram voltage by .1" as arneeboy did :-). I'm at a lost and any help would be appreciated.

Update:
I've been running Civ IV for several hours now and it has not crashed. I had to make some adjustments to the game's settings though. With the graphics on medium and the audio set to mono, it still crashed. So I turned the graphics back up to high and just turned all sounds and music off. Tada! I now have several hours of non-interrupted (albeit mute) gameplay! It's annoying to not be able to enjoy the sounds of the game and the music, but it's less annoying than the game crashing my entire PC! So if anybody out there is having troubles with the game crashing thier PC, try turning all the sounds and music off. I hope this helps.
