Hi there i am playing on Warlord, huge map, with babylon. I was using monarchy and decided to switch to democracy as soon as i obtained the tech. I assumed that my corruption would go down when i switched as the manual state that corruption is less in democracy than monarchy. Plus i have seen numerous post saying how democracy lowers corruption. Well when i switched my corruption and shield was actually went up not down. Does anyone have a suggestion or idea why that happened. thanks

Are you absolutely sure you were in Democracy and not still Anarchy?
(sorry if this sounds derogatory but I have no idea if this is your first game or not)

Corruption goes down if you switch to democracy! I think you may still be in anarchy, as tacit_exit said....

Corruption grows under Democracy because you get more taxes from cities.
To be more precise: under Democracy you get more gold from cities, so number of gold lost due to corruption increases, but the percentage of corruption does not increase.

Example (numbers from my last game):

Monarchy
Income from cities: 1000
Corruption: 200

Democracy:
Income from cities: 1400
Corruption: 300

So money left for science, entertainment, maintenance etc. were:
Monarchy: 800
Democracy: 1100

If you have the city governor managing city moods, in the turn after you switch government he gets all confused. Usually by next turn it goes back to normal. This may be the case, and if so, every time you switch, go to your capital, right click and select the city governor. Assign him what you want (manage moods, etc.) and select all cities. click on default for new cities and it should run smoothly.
