Still in the top 200!!
Many men love power tools (myself included) - here in Britain a lot of them imagine to themselves that they are in fact Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon when handling a Black and Decker hammer drill (the company that markets a "gun holster" style holder for power drills will clean up in the "menopausal male" market sector).

So, given that there are such strong bonds formed between man and tool (no jokes please!) which one would you most want to have with you if stranded on a desert island (you can assume they are battery operated and will run indefinately)

Answers based on pure affection or hard headed practicality are equally welcome

Oh bloody hell, he's off again....

In answer to your poll, I would say blowtorch, as I could use it to start a fire. It would save faffing about with sticks and flints.

Yes, but with a chainsaw you could build an excellent shack to live in....and with the jigsaw you could make tools much more easily :)

True, but I'd still rather have fire in order to cook food. And I could use the blowtorch to burn down trees to construct a shelter with. Kind of. :crazyeye:

"And I could use the blowtorch to burn down trees to construct a shelter with."

You're no Barry Bethell are you?!

No shelter to keep the wind and rain off your fire and you're in trouble!

Thinking about it - you could use the jack hammer to construct a cave and (with a bit of imagination) create the sparks to make a fire with. And mine coal for you fire with (or something) too. So maybe thats a better answer!

Desert-Island-related things you can do with a chainsaw:
Cut down trees
Open coconuts
Run around pretending to be in Evil Dead VII

Enough said

Erm, Barry who?

I guess that means no...

BARRY WHO??!!!

Barry Bethell was the TV DIY bloke who inspired a nation to improve their homes throughout the 50s 60s and 70s - an icon! (and the inspiriation behind Kenny Everrett's comedy DIY character who always ended up maiming himself).

Hedge-trimmer would be good for making bivouakk style shelter with and for cutting down small twig and suchlike for kindling. And haircuts too - maybe?

My kind of DIY character is the father in Home Improvement. That was a great show.

I wonder if you could successfully hunt (and kill) an animal using a chainsaw? Could you kill a fish with one, assuming it was waterproof?

Maybe this is where the drill would come in handy - you'd have to wrestle the animal to the ground first I suppose? :)

No, its an electric one - you know, like a kind of high powered hair dryer but it would run on batteries. They must have them where you come from!

It would probably come in handy for filleting very large fish.

I would also choose the chainsaw, having a good deal of experience using one. Construct a shelter, carve groovy sculptures, and scare away dangerous natives.

For sheer versatility, I would have to go with a rotary multi tool ... complete with every bit and accessory known to mankind.

Jigsaw. I figure if someone floats by, I'll say "hey, you! On the raft! I'll trade you this for your raft!"

a distillery, of course.

Though no such strong bond exists between me and anything but my computer, I'd have to say Heat gun (electric blowtorch) - mostly because it sounds cool.

If I really had to choose, I would like a plain old knife.
