Diplomacy window errors in multiplayer mode

I've seen this error mentioned in a few other places but not seen any solution yet:

- Running Civ IV in Multiplayer LAN mode with some AI's
- Have latest patch installed
- Can call up the diplomacy screen with the AI players ok

But...

- Have great difficulty calling up the diplomacy screen with other real (non-AI) players. Often the other player is not notified that somebody is trying to contact them.

- When the diplomacy screen is eventually presented, it is corrupt: The leader images does not appear, and it's very difficult to do anything at all except exit.

Anybody else seen this, it happens everytime with any of our 3 WinXP machines on the WLAN.
