Do AI CIVs have a Golden Age?

If they do how can you tell when they are having one?

yes, I think they have.

you can only tell if you spy in their cities.

Yes, they have. Just check one of their cities, and if you notice that their tiles are producing one more shield and one more gold than you expected, there you have, AI Golden Age.

I can confirm what Evincar says and will add this. Watch out for a civ in a Golden Age! they will want to use those extra shields.

Thanks,

Thats good to know.
Now I see why those Romans can be so hard to beat in the early game.
You fight them, one of their legions win and it triggers a Roman Golden age!

Any ideas on how to deal with an aggressive neighbour who will go Golden Age if any of their UU win.

Can you tell if a CIV is in a Golden Age without espionage - say if you don't have writing or you are at war with them?

This is why Persia and Rome are a pain as neighbors. Great early UU and the resultant GA.

My advice, play nice, at any price. Trade, trade, trade give gold per turn whenever possible. With Persia I actually hope they will demand something from me because then I can give it to them and they wont attack me right away (immortals give me the begeezies)! With Rome I either wipe them out before they get their Legions or play nice.

The notable others (Zulu, Aztec, Iroq) aren't too bad, their bark is worse than their bite. As always bring in alies. This is another reason why trade is so important.

I usually don't care if they'll go into their Golden Age or not. A GA is not going to help them if you've the bigger army. :yeah:

If you're the weaker party, ally with other neighbouring AIs will also mostly nullify their GA advantage.

I don't think so, but you can assume and deduce I guess. Once you see their UU winning a battle or notice them going to war with another civ with their UU around, it's safe to assume they're going into a GA.

Anyway, I think a GA in ancient times is not that useful. I usually aim for a Middle Ages GA. ;)

Sometimes it's very difficult to figure out that an AI is in GA. An example ;)

It was early industrial age. I was building US, and I was happy because I knew I would finish it before the Egyptians. Then they went at war. Even better, I thought. Next thing I know is that 4 turns before me, they finished US  Then, I investigated Thebes. Oh my God, they were in their GA!! since they hadn't built anything else, I concluded that one of their War Chariots had killed someone and triggered their GA!! :crazyeye:

KD: No! I reloaded one turn before and the US box shield wasn't full, just "1 turn".

A really late GA for the War Chariot!!

While starting next to Persia can be a royal pain, Rome for some reason never gives me trouble. They tend to be eaten alive by Persia, Egypt or Greece, unless I get 'em first.

With Aztecs, perhaps it'd be beneficial to trigger their GA ASAP (by suiciding a Warrior against their Jags) so that it only benefits one or two cities?
