Well does the game throw out your original difficulty setting after 2050 AD? Because after I defeat the game by 2050 at cheiftain, the enemy civs gang-up on me with military alliances that I was never aware of. I click on the diplomatic screen, everyone is either annoyed, or furious at me even though scorewise I dominate. Also, since when the hell did swordsman ever defeats rifleman? Please help, the Japanese city of Saitama needs your help! Where else are they gonna play Eng. v. Sweden at the World Cup?

Oh does anyone out there have a Polynesian Civ?

Graz Austria
Innsbruck Austria
Basel Switzerland
Metz FRANCE!!!! For God`s sake!!!
Pilsen Czech Republic
Elbing so small nobody ever heard of it
Tyrnau Austria (?)
Bozen ITALY!!!!!
Marburg STRIKE! That one`s German and fairly well-known
Budweis POLAND!!!!!
Allenstein another 1-house settlement????
Ravel do you mean Revall??? That`s somewhere in the Baltic!!!

Do you want to resurrect the Third Reich????? I´m not for political correctness when it`s historically incorrect. But this is rather more then necessary......

But all cities bruinesian listed were once german, or german was spoken there (or is still today). The german civ is NOT the modern federal republic of germany, more a cultural group distinguished by their language.
The germans are mentioned by Tacitus 2000 years ago under this name - and still today. So I think you can't count only last 50 years.

sure, all those cities once belong to some state or other that was somehow affiliated with the word "German". But so was Rome! Heiliges Roemisches Reich deutscher Nation - that spanned almost all of central Europe. And many many other places! OK, German as a spoken language is a fairly good criterion, but I think it`s a good idea considering the last 100 years to restict the names used in the game to places that belong to Germany (and maybe Austria) today so as not to injure people`s sensibilities unnecessarily.

Would it seem right to include "New York" in the English city list, and "New Orleans" in the French???? So just because there is no Swiss or Polish civ in CivIII we shouldn`t just ignore those people!

Also, the fact that Budweis and Pilsen are amongst the best-known "German" towns speaks volumes - seems beer is estimated highest of all in certain countries.....

so, should we include Lynchburg, Tennessee?????

Ahem, excuse me. If i get it correctly from your criticism of my german city list is that you object to: including German cities not in the current German state, and cities that are "one-house settlements." Well thank goodness the folks at Firaxis weren't taking your advice when they decided on the city names. Or we'd be naming "new..whatever" endlessly, which I object to b/c it lacks authencity.

First of all, the game included Salzburg in the German cities list, which is in, I guess you know, AUSTRIA! And if hamlets bugs you b/c of their obscurity, then tell me who lives in Ixtapaluca? Must be a HUGE town to be in the Civ, right? And as I stare at the list of Indian cities, there are some that obviously do no qualify under your standards, like Decca, Lahore, and Karachi b/c they are not from India, but guess what, it's there anyway (good guy that sid!). So I didn't start this at all.

Oh and come on really, the Swiss offended? It's not like I put Geneva or something. And allenstein is Olsztyn, Poland, pop. 163,900. Elbing is Elblag, also in Pol. pop. 125,000.

It's a fun exercise going around Central Europe unearthing the extent of Germanic culture. Now I'm on to my Arab civ city list, it's a long one already. And you will hate it when I put some Spanish cities down:D

first of all: put in those Spanish towns!!!!! there is no historic fear and/or hate between the respective nations/countries anymore!!!!!

I don`t want to put you down and my initial response was a bit too harsh, but your selection would be seen as being in especially bad taste by quite a few people here in Germany, and by many who aren`t here because of the historical extent of German "culture".
I think it a good idea to keep from using towns that "belong" to more then one culture for longer times when there`s animosities between the respective parties (wouldn`t include Strassburg, neither with the French, nor with the Germans). Especially now-Polish towns are a hot potatoe, since many elderly people here still grumble, or even shout about that. I guess you are as intrigued by history as I am and when I play the Germans i often behave historically correct (then i wonder why everyone is "annoyed" or "furious" )

second: I always though the city names suck, even in CivI. I acknowledge the problem with Civs like India ("recently" split up), Iroquese (didn`t get a real chance in history) and several others.

third: I`ll now give myself about one minute to come up with as many big/important German towns as possible. I guess they`ll be representing Germany (and yes, for historical reasons I`ll limit that to present day Germany) better then the original list. Tell me, when you run out of them in a game....

Berlin
Dresden
Leipzig
Muenchen
Heidelberg
Mannheim
Stuttgart
Tuebingen
Koeln
Dortmund
Duesseldorf
Bremen
Bremerhaven
Kiel
Passau
Freiburg
Hamburg
Rendsburg
Eisenach
Nuernberg (maybe we better leave that one out, too ;) )
Potsdam
Wiesbaden
Mainz
Regensburg
Hannover
Tauberbischofsheim
Rastatt
Bielefeld
Moenchengladbach
Essen
Marburg
Bamberg
Hamm
AugsburgDuisburg
Ulm
Karlsruhe
Bruchsal
Erlangen
Ettlingen
Halle a. d. Saale

.

OK, time`s up. That`s most of the big ones but there`s many, many more. Also, a few smaller ones slipped in but you actually might know some of them for their historical significance...

I don`t know where you`re from, so in case you´re not a native German speaker (I guess so) a short note: in German there`s vowels with dots above then: a, o, and u may have them. That can also be spelt: ae, oe, ue. This makes up for many mistakes in English publications where the dots or the transcription often is hilarious. I`ve used the *e spelling since the forum doesn`t support the dots.

The City List includes such things like Lutetia (Roman Fundation), Massilia (Greek) - Paris, Marseille. New York was called Nieuw Amsterdam at its fundation. That are the inconsistencies with civs of different ages.

btw: maybe Holsten Lager should be added to the German city list, sure a nice place to be;)

hey, SanPellgrion, I know! But Italians and French don`t fight or fear each other because of the Lutetia thing!!!! :D I`m all for including these places; I`m just saying it ain`t good to take in "German" towns when many people from France or Poland will have bad memories from the "German" times.

I actually had trouble believing it but when asked why they didn`t try to get around their military service, almost 20% of Polish young men said they wanted their country to be strong enough to survive against Germany - in 2001!!!!!

So, I guess you are right, not including things that are still not history. But because the game begins early with few civs, I somehow think more of "culture groups" starting, e.g.: the roman empire is still present, it laid foundation to western culture.

that`s the words I was looking for: "still not history". Thanx, SanPellegrino!

that culture grouping is right on! And I guess if the Romans had kept control, well, where would we be?????

might be a good idea to check those "Russian/Soviet" towns while I`m in my "respect other peoples feelings - mood" ;)

np. but what about wuppertal in your german city list? schwebebahn = world wonder;)

ok none of these answers his questions

i never completed a whole game, so i dunno exactly the problem, but i have noticed if i am way ahead in culture, power, and score, most rival civs seem to resent you.
like ive come to realize (even in CTP) that if the whole world is against you, without any provokation from you, then you are kickin some ass!
im assuming that you won the game at 2050, and as such the rivals resent you and thats why they have negative feelings for you.

also, swordsman killing rifleman is a thing that comes with Civ's combat... remember the battleship-sinking phalanxes of Civ2?

hope this helps some
