Do not underestimate Continental Surveyor, especially if you intend to start on/by the coast

I like coastal starts because Gunboats (especially if you upgrade to them to level five Supremacy Vindicators with +1 capacity for aircraft) are the most powerful units to begin with.

Agree. I always have to tiptoe around with Gunboats in the early game until they get promoted. Early alien Rippers or Sea Dragons hit harder than I can hit back. Often as I am exploring, I can get backed into a corner with 3 Rippers and no easy way out. But yes, if you can keep them alive and grow them, they are great.
