OK, newbie question:

How can you avoid getting a domination victory if you want to go on and get a conquest victory. Usually, by the time you can complete a conquest, the whole map is filled with cities, so you would naturally posess 2/3 of the world's territory before you conquer all foreign cities.

Can you get around that in any way other than by razing every city you take, and leaving a smoking wasteland behind?

Basically, you conquer the world upto the domination limit, either raze and resettlingo on the way or just taking the AI cities.

Once you have reached domination you then have to just raze.

Keep tabs on your domination limit status by using Chief Paco's or Dianthus domination limit tools. Details in the C&C forum. Look for 'Mapstat'.

to see it done stylishly in action, check out a few of the game threads in the Hall of Fame forum.

Since I'm playing a GOTM, I don't think I can change any of the settings.

I guess I'll have to watch how much land I take! Thanks for the tip on "mapstat", fret.

If your playing GOTM then your not allowed to use Mapstat! If you were then everyone would be forced into milking the game to stand a chance of getting one of the highest scores (tiny maps excepted).

You have to wing it and guess how close you are in GOTM.

If you don't want this to hapen, just turn off the domination victory thing in the setup screen. Or you could set the standards really high like 100% of the map, if you have conquests. :yeah:

Thanks for the second tip on mapstat, Fret (that I can't use it in a GOTM)!

Uggg. Well, as it's my first GOTM, I don't have any specific victory condition in mind yet. If it comes to domination, so be it. If those Germans, Greeks, and Zulus would just back off a bit, maybe they could keep their little continents until the end of the game.

Dogma:

In Conquests (C3C); your population and territorial percentages are listed in the Victory Scoring. You can access it by clicking on the small V box by the main status box. The Keybord shortcut is F8.

There is another way. Play on a map with at least 33% of the land being uninhabitable. Obviously you would have to do this in the editor. Lil' ole map-maiking me will just have to do one like this!

If you don't build many/any cultural buildings, then your territory won't expand and you won't control 2/3 of the land, even if you conquer many cities. Thats the only I could come up with right now, aside from razing/abandoning cities.

As a multi-game GOTM player, I sure hope MapStat is legal (I've been using it for months)

All it shows is tiles owned and who the opponents are, so there's no spoiler information.

Where's the fun in hunting down every last city anyway? The game is normally effectively over well before you hit the Domination limits anyway.
I agree. It just takes extra time and effort to take all the cities in the map - I have never seen someone have a suitable rival after you've attained 70% of the territory and 70% of the population. No AI could stand a chance against that.
