I havent found this bug in the forums, but maybe havent searched enough.

Anyway, i have lots of problems that the enemies lesser units defending my better(both stronger and veteran) units.

if it was only meele defeating ranged i could believe it but i have the experience of archers defeating marines, archers defeating longbowman, axeman defeating mazemen. I have noticed this both inside cities and outside.
This happens rather often, even on the settlers difficult level.

anyone noticed it?

Defenders can get alot of bonuses with upgrades, defensive buildings (walls, castles) and not to forget if city is build on a hill, it gets an automatic 25% defensive bonus, plus archers already has a defensive bonus of 25% in cities.

What you need to do is take catapults/artillery with you to smash strong enemy city defenses, then attack.

Most units in hills (25%) and forests (50%) also get defensive bonuses so take this into account... of course the random factor can make things a bit strange sometimes :p

What NinjaCool said. The unit pairings you've listed are actually not all *that* different in stats, and like he said, some units can end up 2-3x as powerful as their listed stats from defense adjustments.. When you have Archers defeating fully healed Infantry on a regular basis, come back and let us know ;)

Well, this has been a "problem" and common complaint since Civ1. Civ4 has the advantage that you can figure out why your units are losing to stone age warriors:

When your mouse is above the tile you want to attack, hold the <ALT> key. That way, you will get an indication of the odds that your unit will win as well as a summary of the different modifiers that affect these odds.

One of the many highly important but undocumented or half-documented features in the game.

didnt experience any unfair fighting, fighting at lord-mode...and really, i never ever never experienced a infanterie unit beeing defeated by a archer!!! :) but I always first bombard the city defence bonus down to 0, then i use of course city-attack-bonus-upgraded-units..infanterie with only +20%power i dont use against cites..i use the +20 or +30% against city units for it..and i really never got unfair fights..i noticed however the choppers are useless units...if I attack an old infanterie, my chopper always looses..if i attack the uograded version(mechanized infanterie) my chopper always wins..because of the +100% against armored units..but its still strange lossing from the weaker units while winning from the upgraded, but then again, i just go in with tanks on the infanterie and just take down the infanterie first, then I'll go in with the choppers to clean everything left :) i mostly loose 1:10 against the computer using these tactics..meaning, if I have 10units, the computer needs 100 to fight me :) but like i said, use your upgrades wisely!! when your units got 3upgrades, spend them always in 1 direction first..if you have +10attack, +10city +10repair/turn...then you're wasting experience...instead make 1 unit +30attack, one other +30city, and other you can give +10movement repair or even +10 on nearby reapairs...and never use the "repairing units while offensive" just leave them for their repair purposes :)

Thanks for all replies. I have notice this "problem" since Civ1, and i know that they fixed some of it in a patch to play the world.
It could be that there is more parameters in Civ4, i will keep an eye open

Oh man, check out the General forums for posts simular to this. One guy on there is all upset because his 35 Knights could not take a city

Course, I guarentee you, the AI had Spearmen, Wall, ect. Maybe even an +80% defence factor. And Catapults? What are they?

RTS tactics don't work in this game; and unlike RTS games, units don't ALWAYS hit; for the exact damage; for the exact results. As a human player, I would LOVE to see a stack of 35 Knights: I'd make a couple catapults and Spearmen, make some popcorn, and watch it play out :mischief:

I, personally, love how my best laid plans can fail in this game  :)

to get an accutate reading of the battle ahead click the move unit to button then hover over what you want to attack. it will show you your stats against theirs, including defences and upgrades. green being yours and red respectivly being theirs. and it works for units as well as cities.

enjoy!
