Does anyone ever use espionage? I have never found a use for it, it never works and it is usually to expensive anyway. To me this seems to be a waste.

There is no "never" with random number generators.

While it might cost the same to steal a tech as to trade for it, your opponent doesn't get the cash.

Sabotaging production is not only relatively cheap, but you succeed pretty often.

I believe it's also one way to get the AI to declare war without taking a hit in reputation or triggering MPP.

There are uses but it's not easy or cheap.

Espionage??

First you have to spend time and money with the dead-end civ advance.

Then, you have to spend more time and money with the Intelligence Agency Small Wonder.

Then, you have to spend MORE money TRYING to plant a spy.

After all this, you finally have the privelege of spending EXORBITANT amounts of money for espionage operations of very dubious effectiveness - and have an international incident if they fail (and they often do, the money being lost).

I wouldn't waste my time. But since I do NOT want to waste my time I went into the Editor and lowered the cost of everything related to spying, and allowed diplomats to initiate propaganda.

I suggest you do the same.

:goodjob: aye aye Cruiser, i'm with ya on that one..

I reduced the cost of all the espionage missions to make them an affordable part of the game... as they stand, you just waste fortunes on try to steal tech when it'd cheaper just buying them from the other civs..

When you plant a spy, don't you also get the chance to see all of the AI units in the military advisor screen ?
Or is it something else which allows that ?

Yeah. This is the only espionage I ever really do. Very useful when trying to pick someone to go to war with.

But isn't it frustrating to pay the ungodly amount of gold to plant a spy or whatever and it rarely works. At least it barely works for me.

I cant complain about the cost but you would think for that much money you would have no chance of getting caught. Because of this it is the only time I use the save game cheat. I wait till the end of my turn before I try planting spies. If I fail, I just reload and wait till next turn to try again. It usually takes 20 turns or so to get spies planted in all civs.

Planting a spy is not that expensive. The most I have ever seen was around 300 gold.

Espionage was to powerful in Civ I and II, but Firaxis overcompensated for that in III IMHO. I will always build Intel Agency to know others'armies, and plant spies, yet hardly make use apart from that.

Wonder if the same rules apply for AI btw, this makes it expensive for them as well and since bankrupting the AI seems our main hobby it is preventing AI espionage as well!

But there is no way to verify, AI might be cheating as well.

If the current implementation encourages cheating by human players it should be changed anyway!
