Well... I was having this issue for some time, and I decided to post it, since now I require to alt-tab more...

When I'm at the game (even at the main menu) if I do alt-tab and then come back, everything on the game goes grey. However, the game is still responding, if I'm on game I can see sparks and all the effects, just all the graphics, everything is grey. I believe it's sort of config problem, but I'm not sure.

So... anyone have any ideas?

Playing on windows mode is not a solution for me (I'll lag a lot). Also I don't alt-tab that often, but ocassionally I have to alt-tab.

It's weird since I remember that some months ago when I first installed CiV I could alt-tab fine.

EDIT: Just to add something, It is possible for this to be related to the other problem I've got (And nobody cares) that Civ5 automatically set some graphical settings to low at start?.

Yes this game does have a problem releasing graphics. Yes it has been getting worse each patch. Hopefully (in the not too distant future) we will have a patch that "fixes" instead of "makes worse" the game. For some reason "balance of game play" comes before "smoothness of operation".

That's true... every patch seems to break most mods.

But that does not help with my problem!!
Aren't there any solutions?

So you're saying I cannot do anything and should shrug off and blame 2K for rushing a game?

Rushing what? It used to work just fine. I was able to alt tab, go into sleep mode all the time. It only stopped working after certain patches. I think if anything, we should be allowed to choose which patch works for us, and be able to skip over the ones that do not. The modders are capable of providings mods that work, until 2K can figure out why each time a patch is sent out it makes things worse.

Er... if that's so then they rushed the patches:).
Still I believe that they rushed the game, since it was buggy, however it became more buggy when they patched it, it's hilarious.

I have a pretty good machine and an ATI-card from last year.

My games are the same as the OP mentions, everything over standard map gets pixalated in grey, and that can be solved for the moment by zooming in and clear out the tiles that are grey, they get cleared.

But later in the game tiles gets "polka-dotted" and can't be removed with zoom or anything. Not even reloading the game takes this away.

So, yes, it IS hilarious! But I'm not laughing.

Bump!.- I've attached a pic to better show my problem; please if there is anyone that can provide tips it could be really appreciated:

Yes. everything becomes grey and the only things that can be seen are the sprites of some props, in this case the gems and the shadows of some units, nothing else. It forces me to quit and restart game, and It might be a config problem, so anyone?

Ah, and, yeah; I don't really want to alt-tab but sometimes Jdownloader minimzes the game to input captcha or just another program needs my atention.

I really don't think there is any solution besides don't alt-tab, sorry. As I already explained this is a common issue with many games (although exact results vary). You will probably have better luck trying to figure out why windowed mode crashes.
