 New at this game Civ III, and think it is a great addiction! Anyways after building a city and making a few warrior units to protect it, I find that the next move was making a settler. It took about 30 moves to do this and durring the time in which I get to one more turn to make the settler, I get a message from my domestic advisor saying there is no growth in this city and would I like to "delay production" or "abandon the city".

My question is how do I get immediate or quick population increase to be able to keep the city going and to produce the unit that I need?

Well it depends...

If you have a really nice city surrounded by cattle or wheat you can create a worker there and move it down to the other city.

You can build cities exclusively on grasslands or floodplains in the beginings of the game (I generally do this).

You can wait on the settler and build something else.

Getting out of Despotism and irrigating really helps...though I only go this route if I have crappy tiles (like all plains, not floodplains)

Also you can irrigate squares with food bonuses (i.e. wheat, flood plain) and you still get +1 food, even in Despotism. IMO, very important in the early game.

Thanks for the tips on this.. This game is really addictive, and one problem I find playing this game is I learn something too late and need to start over again..
