Hello,

I have a real problem running this game on my new rig... I know I have read many posts about CTD and black screens however I wanted to post a new thread to try and ascertain where the issue lies that many people are experiencing. Being a PC enthusiast I know that nearly all PCs are different in some way, but ideally systems testing should be carried out on the wide variety of hardware combinations to catch all the majority of these types of issues (I know, as I am a UAT manager and it is my job to find them!).

I played this game on my old rig:
MOBO: ASUS K8V deluxe
Power: Antec True power 480W
Processor: AMD64 3200+
1 GB of generic DDR 400 RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce 6800 Ultra
Sound: SB Audigy 2 ZS

It ran like a dream. No lockups, freezes, skipping, CTD... It was the most stable of all the recent games I had seen (and there have been some shockers, X3, UFO Aftershock... etc!). I managed to play through all the game in around 2 days on a huge map. The only minor niggle I had was zooming out caused graphical corruption which was cured by zooming back in.

My new rig (and I spent £3000+ on this!) is
Alienware Aurora 7500
MOBO: ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE
Power: Enermax 600W (TBC!)
Processor: AMD FX 57
Ram: 2gb of extra low latency Corsair XMS
Graphics: 2 NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GTX KO in SLI mode
Sound: SB X-Fi Xtreme Music.

Unfortunately I can not play for more than about 15 minutes before it crashes. I know actually have a save game that freezes up the new system as soon as it loads up... So I tried loading this "buggy?" save on my old rig... and guess what, works like a dream!

And yes, all drivers are up to date!!! (as for some reason Alienware rely on very old drivers on their new PCs as they prefer to send a rig out with better bench mark results rather than up to date!!!)

I am gradually trying to get to the bottom of it, and it seems that it is when it invokes a new sound effect that my new rig crashes, in this case the fortify FX.

My next port of call is to swap the old Audigy out of my old rig and into my new one to see if this is genuinely the cause... I will repost once tested.

Don't get me wrong, I know that Firaxis et al would have done their upmost to get this game out in good order, and I am not questioning the testing done on the game in any way, I just want to create a constructive starting point to try and cure a few peoples problems!

the reason for the "old" drivers might be stability.
alienware aren't totally stupid ;)

true true! but so many new games come with graphical glitches that NVIDIA do work really hard at fixing with new driver updates (I mean have you ever read the release notices!!).

Anywho, guess what...? Swapping my Audigy 2 into my new rig actually does improve the stability...! 2 hours play time now and not one lock up... Will keep playing to see if it lasts!

Please do keep us all up to date. I will check back here to see if we need an older driver for our video cards.

Nah, graphics drivers don't seem to be my issue.

Old PC was running on 81.85 when I first played Civ 4. This was the stable system.

New PC came with 77.77 installed and would not run. Updated both systems to the very latest now (81.95) and old still works fine, new one still does not.

The only stable solution I have successfully tried is to put the Audigy 2 card into my new rig.

To confirm this, tomorrow (or should I say later today :D ) I will be putting the X-fi into my old rig to check what happens then!
