Frustrated newbie!

Hi all,

I have the Radeon 9550 graphics card. I received the error, "Failed to initialize renderer" and have followed the directions to the letter to correct it to no avail...both sets of them. Can someone give me an idea where to go next to fix this game so I can start to play it?!?

Did you try to get the latest patch and see if it helps any? The latest one is 1.52

I was able to get past the,"Initialize renderer" error but now, as the 2K screen starts, the screen starts to fill with squiggles, and boxes until nothing can be seen. Is this a setting issue?

Yes, I was able to download the patch. I'm not sure if it has helped since I can't see beyond the junk on the screen

*shrugs*. I guess you have to search the forums to see if you can find someone in a similar situation... I don't have the card that you have.

Maybe try and turn off videos. In the civ4 con fig, you can turn off videos, it will stop the initial videos from loading but it also stops wonder movies and tech discovered pop-up. Might be worth it if it lets you play the game. Not really a fix, but maybe a temporary workaround.

Get a better graphics card. Go to your local bestbuy and get a crappy 256 or 128 mb card for around 50-100 dollars...
