I have two questions, on behalf of my son, who is enjoying the game.

First, he's playing out a civilization way past 2050 (I think he's in 2350 or so) and he's working on something called "future tech 3." He was wondering what that is.

Second, he says that he doesn't enjoy Starting a Civ as much as he enjoys the later stages of the game. That's why he just keeps playing his current Civ instead of starting a new one! Is there a way to find games that are already in progress ... with cities established, etc?

Thanks for any help.

Hi!

Future tech?
I don't exactly know what that is, but it was(in Civ I and Civ II) a tech that gave nothing to the discoverer, but points at the end(retirement) of the game.
So in my opinion it is nothing.

If You ask about what could that tech mean?
Well ermmm..... read some Sci-fi novels or watch some Sci-fi films.
It could be anything from HyperSpace Jump to Mooncolony, Secrets of the Human Brain, Evulunitiary Mutation, Longevity Vaccine.
Main thing is: It doesn't give any benefit to the inventer, but some points.

Doesn't like the starting?

Try Conquests(Expansion set: Conquest) or a Scenarios(like World War I-II, You can download many searching this site[like: Iraq vs Usa, Sengoku Jidai, etc) and/or accelerated production.

Maybe there is an option for Accelerated start(in Alpha Centaury there was one thing like that and you started with 3 or 4 colonies, just like in Master of Orion II, where you could own 3 or 4 star system right at the begining).

That's all.

The future techs dont' affect the game at all, just the score, I believe... and only then if it's before 2050.

And why doesn't he like the earlier parts of the game? Does he dislike the expansion phase of the game, or does he just not like the limited units and city improvements and such?

If he doesn't like the expansion aspect, he could try playing one, two, three, five city challenges... basically intentionally limiting your amount of expansion. It's quite fun.

If he just finds the more modern ages more interesting to play, you could, I suppose, edit the tech tree somehow so that you actually start out with all of the ancient and medieval techs.

My brother does the same thing. He hates the early phases of the game. I enjoy expansion, finding other civs, settling, and the like. It's fun.:p
Future Tech, btw, just gives you a few bonus points at the end. If it's before 2050, I'd set my research slider on 10% and jack up the luxury slider so all my citzens are happy. That will get your score much, much higher.:king:

There's many scenarios in the Creation & Customization forum (look under the scenario subforum). Also, take a look at the Stories & Tales forum, and Succession Games subforum. There's even a few saves in the Strategies & Tips forum. Unfortunately, the saves in the uploads6 folder were recently deleted to save space. The GOTM and HOF forums also have a bunch of saves. If you want saves without downloading a bunch of other files for the GOTM, then I think it's the GOTMs before GOTM13.

Balazs and rychan are correct about Future Tech - they do not have any in-game effects, but before 2050 they (marginally) increase the score. Still playing at ~2350, I dare assume your son does not care for score, so he won't get anything from them, except perhaps the satisfation of being at Future Tech 1024 when the AI's still researching Combustion.
