i have a 2.66 Ghz, 1GB of ram, and a 128MB radon 9800 vid card and the 1000 AD scenario plays very choppy is that normal?

Yes. There is something wrong with the game - it was poorly optimized and consumes a ridiculous amount of RAM.

I am near minimal requirements. I found the following helpful.

Defragment your harddisk. (takes a long time)

Turn all graphics to low. (and restart)

Turn off sound.

Expand virtual memory. (also restart the computer)

Play on small or tiny maps.

Turn off autosave in the Civ4config in the civfolder.

It just seems ridiculous that this game needs this level of resources to run and that so many people need to make these kinds of sacrafices with the game. There is nothing technical about this game that should require it to need so many resources - the graphics are hardly spectacular.

how do you expand virtual memory?????

I've found this page on how to set your virtual memory.

http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php

Where do I set the placing and size of the page file?

At Control Panel | System | Advanced, click Settings in the “Performance” Section. On the Advanced page of the result, the current total physical size of all page files that may be in existence is shown. Click Change to make settings for the Virtual memory operation. Here you can select any drive partition and set either ‘Custom’; ‘System Managed’ or ‘No page file’; then always click Set before going on to the next partition.

Okay now I went and broke down and finnaly ordered another 512, so I'll have a gig now. Problem is I get different answers everywhere on how high to set my Virtual memory.

Also how can I check if it is fragmented or not??

It's a tweak utility to configure the advanced features of your video card. I myself ran it and it worked perfectly. There are a multitude of options to choose from.

Will it work fine even though I have an omega driver in place of the original? This may be a stupid question but bear with me as I am rather ignorant about video stuff.

hehe it's ok. Yes it will work fine. And if you don't like the results you can simply return the values to their original settings. The program doesn't actually install anything on your system. Just tweaks your settings.

btw, I'm just going to respond to the other thread of which you might want to check out, as I posted a bit about your Omega drivers your using.

Great! Well I'll use it then as it seems to be working. How is it that its speeding up performance btw. Does it reduce video quality at all with these suggested settings you did?
