Gangis Khan has met his match... Taoism

Gangis Khan is currently twice defeated by Taoism in my game.

How you ask?

Simple, in my save game, every time I found Taoism (which is the turn of my Autosave), the game locks up, requiring me to reset my computer. Previously he was defeated by the Oracle, but after a reboot I was able to play for another 15 minutes. Then I founded Taoism and haven't been able to get past that point since.

I have tried running the game in Window mode to monitor my CPU and RAM usage (via the task manager). CPU runs at 100% the entire time I'm in the game. RAM stays arround 400mb the entire game as well. There are no spikes or anything else notable in either case, the computer just locks up, and then the screen goes black, and I get a "no signal" message on my monitor.

I'm running the 1.52 patch, and have the most recent version of all my video drivers. DxDiag.txt can be found here.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I'll give it a shot, see if it works.

I've had the same problem happen previously when I opened the science advisor, or when I turned on the grid lines on the map. That hasn't happened yet this game (I unistalled and reinstalled all my video card drivers before starting this one), so just turning off the wonder movies might work.

Having disable the movies, Gangis Khan has defeated Taoism and continued on his way, reampaging acros the world, searching for an ever-elusive source of hourses, when suddenly he meets another who can defeat him, The Science Advisor! Oh the horror.

So yeah... I'm able to play for about a half hour or so, per sitting, before I head to the science advisor, or open a city view, and the game locks up, just as before.

omegas are no good with Civ 4. I started out with the 5.12s, got horrible sometimes terminal stuttering on religion movies. Moved to 5.6s, same results except the diplomacy screen was also fatal. Tried 4.7s for kicks and wonder movies were screwed up too.

Here's what I did.

Turned off AA in the Civ 4 options
Patched to ATI 5.13s
Deleted everything in Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/My Games/Civilization 4
Unchecked "Let the application decide" under AA settings in the catalyst control center
Cleared the cache on Civ 4 startup just to be safe

Voila, it works, sort of. I still get some stuttering on leader portraits, but it's more like a hiccup every few seconds instead of the infinite kachunking it was before.

If this doesn't fix your problem, you could just turn off movies and freeze animations.

I have turned off movies.

I've never had problems with movies stuttering or anything running slow, it just crashes when certain screens open (Science Advisor, Ciy View, Wonder Movies, Diplomacy Screen, etc..). I'll try disabling the "Let the application decide" thingy and see if that helps, and I'll give clearing the cache a shot as well. I've already tried reinstalling it and wipeing that directory.

Opened "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\_Civ4Config".

I can't remember what the exact name of the property in there is, I think it was NoMovies, but I'm not positive.

Anyway, just do a search for "movie" and you should find the line. I believe you just change it so that it = 1 and that'll disable the movies.

Well, I seem to have fixed my problem. I managed to play a Marathon game for 9 hours strait yesterday with no problems :D

All it took was upgrading my motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI and my video card to a eVGA 7800GT.
