Hi gang,

I turned off all the vic conditions other than conqu and dom. I'm on a Large map as America with 10 other civs. Germany's dead.

How in the world do you cope with the corruption generated by taking and holding "huge tracts of land" (said w/ English accent)? I have seen some impressive maps posted from expert players that are holding a massive amount of territory but fail to see how to deal with such a sprawling empire.

And I am not in favor of Jumping my Palace to parts unkown. Although it's a remedy, it's an exploit that just doesn't make sense.

Thanks in advance for input.

Basically you should 'segment' your sprawling empire into 2 distinct areas - the Productive Zone and the Unproductive zone.

Curruption is only a concern in the productive zone - whatever happens - ona huge map you are going to have 25 or 30 cities that have manageable corruption at worst.

For any city outside of the productive zone corruption is irrelivant. These cities only purpose is to increase territory when going for conquest or domination. These cities dont need any inprovements at all if you dont want. They can be used as 10 turn worker or 30 turn settler producing cities - or set them to wealth and they will all produce 1gpt.

Sometimes the best advice/solution is the simplest. I'll end up with a gazillion cities but I'll set them as you suggest.

I am one of the players that enjoys playing on Huge maps, and controlling an insane amount of cities :)

Early in the game, corruption in those far-away cities may be hard to handle - I definitely agree. I don't really have any tips here, because I rarely go to war in that period.

However, later in the game, those corrupt cities are easier to deal with. The reason is simple; you normally have a stable and high income, and vast amounts of gold. You can then use that gold to rush city improvements; Courthouse, Police Station, Factory, some Power Plant, Manufacturing Plant and Offshore Platform.
With all these improvements, your city will produce more than 1 shield, and you can actually put the city to use :)

Just remember not to use those cities to build units - instead airlift them in from your main city core.

Maybe the most answer is simply to switch to communism. Communal corruption is manageable and lets those far out cities have some productive capacity.

Thats not a good idea in vanilla and PTW. Corruption will eventually reach 95% in every city when you are dealing with the number of cities discussed in this thread, even in the Palace.

An excellent idea for Conquests though by all accounts :)

Thanks for the reminder. I've been playing Conquests way too much since it came out and had forgotten how improved communism was. I hardly ever used Communism in Vanilla/PTW and what you just explained was obviously the reason why;)

Yep, Communism is only an emergency government in the earlier versions - for when war weariness gets too much. Otherwise it's Democracy all the way. :)

I'm still playing vanilla Civ3

I actually find Republic to be a good government for a balance between productivity, corruption and war weariness.

Communism does just wind up in a big sink hole once the empire becomes an urban sprawl nightmare.
