General Editor Question

OK, for all of you who have used the PC version of the editor, I have a question. I know you can alter units and civilizations and what not, but can it only be used prior to starting a game? In other words, say I am playing a game and start getting my butt whooped, can I open the save game file and give myself a few extra resources?

nope, i dont think so. Whenever you start a game, the rules that you have in use at that time are basicly saved along with the game. Anything you modify after starting a game will not take effect until you start a new one.

And, as far as i know, you cannot open the save game files with the editor that is compatible with the current version of Mac Civ 3. Dunno about the current PC editor for 1.29f, but i doubt that has the option to edit saved games either.

Besides, adding resources and stuff is considered cheating... :satan:

IIRC, Civ3 without any of the patches would load the scenario rules each time you loaded the game. I believe that was changed with one of the patches, so that the rules were saved with the game, so it didn't have to load rules and settings from the scenario files in later patch upgrades.

However, if you want to go the route of adding things to a saved game, you can always download one of the PC saved game editors and use it in Virtual PC or on a PC and transfer the saved file back to your mac.

Aha! Capital idea my friend!

Two questions about that: 1) where can I download the PC editor, and 2) do I need to have CIV installed on the PC? (in which case, um, never mind)

Thanks!

Welcome UCB_ari!:)

Yes, you must have the PC Civ3 version running through Virtual PC on your mac, or own a PC to do it.

Or, know how to hack and write code!;)

Of course, technichally, you could "borrow" a copy of vanilla Civ 3 PC from a PC-using friend, as long as you already own a copy of Mac Civ 3.

Actually, here on this forum, are several "hacked" PC versions of the editor.. I don't know about the saved game editor.

In my case, I simply had to copy certain Civ III directories from my Mac to the PC in order for the hacked PC editor to run. You get a dialogue box that tells you it can't find anything, but as long as the art folder is in place, you should have no problems getting the editor to work without a PC version of Civ installed on your Virtual PC or your Windows machine (This is how I use the PC Editor on my kids' win98 machine. ) I just click ignore on the first dialogue box, and the editor loads. If you do not copy over the art folder and all of it's subfolders, you will get a dialogue box for every graphic the editor tries to read... a lot of ignore clicking, but this too will work for you, you just won't be able to edit the maps.
