Getting rid of unwanted cities

Is there any way to destroy, abandon, or simply erase cities?

I'm playing as Persia, and "capturing" enemy cities by superior culture gave me a boost in power early in the game with out having to bother with war. This was all good and well, until population of my cities started getting past twelve. These captured cities, being so close to my own, are now taking up valuable resource-rich map spaces that my own (and better placed) cities could benefit from more.

But for what ever the reason, is it possible to just get rid of unwanted cities?

I'm not sure about earlier versions of the game, but if you're playing fully-patched C3C, it's possible. You could right-click on the cities you want to remove, and you'll get a pop-up menu that has "Abandon city" way down at the bottom of the menu. You can also set each city so that it does not have any excess food and start building settlers or workers. When you get to the point that the settler or worker will use up the last of the population, you'll get a pop-up asking if you want to delay production or abandon the city. Don't forget to sell off the improvements before you abandon, though.

It sounds more like you might want to keep the cities and just swap the tiles worked by the workers than to abandon cities.

  :woohoo:

You might want to post a save of that game so that the local experts can give you specific advice.

I can't believe I never though of right clicking on a city...!

I think in most cases I can just rearange the worker locations, but there are some places where there are upto three cities all within a 3x3 square, and it's just unecessarily crowded...

Thanks for the welcomes! I didn't get any sort of feed back on the other forums I posted on.
