Read the forum and saw a few things I liked.
1. Sea travel. In history, seas have always connected people rather then divide them. Please note that this does not include oceans, like the Atlantic.

In civ, however, this is not the case. Building a boat, or a fleet, takes forever, and then you still gotta build the unit you want to sail away with. This is absurd. yeah, building a mighty war fleet might take some time, but shipping settlers should be easy. Look at the greek colonizing the Mediterrainian, or the Roman Empire streaching around it! In civ, expanding through the frozen wastes of Greenland is easier then using the warm waters of the Egeian.

SUCKS!

If you do build a fleet, an army and 500 years later still remember why you built all that, sea borne invasion becomes the next problem.Since it is quite possible to put a unit on every seaside sqaure, and since shore bombardment can never kill off the units, an island can be made completely safe. Even if the attackers use a warfare technology 5000 years more advanced then the defenders!!! Makes me wonder how the battle of Hastings happened.

SUCKS!

..and your ships can take 30 years to navigate the globe (using default movement settings). Even old Magellan was faster than that..

We've seen the demise of the Caravan trade unit, and the introduction of the trade network. Maybe naval power and air power could eventually go the same way - perhaps being represented similarly to culture. You could have a naval influence extending over 10 tiles of sea squares, but not over oceans. Where the influences join up, you are able to trade and transport freely (similarly to a rail network, say). Air transport and trade could be handled similarly. It would probably simplify the game, as I've never known a game to model global naval/air capability/superiority effectively.

Technologies for battleships and carriers would extend the zones of influence, rather than creating new units. And Wonders such as Magellan's voyage and Lighthouse could extend the sea types which can be crossed by naval influence zones.

Any thoughts on this proposal?

sounds good to me. The idea of units marching around on the screen worked in civ 1 and 2. Now, years later, it is hopelessly outdated...

WHAT!!! NO UNITS OR COMBATS:aargh:

There is as much fun in Civ3 as building improvements and wonders as is there in destroying the enemies phalanxes with your Modern Armor:tank: :tank: :tank: :soldier: :mwaha:

Plomeros' comments are very astute, and historically correct.

Sea routes have connected people more than divided them. This is true in all cases except over large oceans, although even in that case ocean travel can occur: the Polynesians for instance, and the Vikings to an extent.

Naval travel, and naval warfare is awful in Civ 3. It should be far easier to build a simple ship for transporting units even before the galley.

See Plutarck's LWC mod on this site, or lower the cost for galleys.
