Have finished already - it was a quick game but there was a lot of slogging over the mountains and through the forest. Like some bad fantasy novel...but I had fun doing it. Didn't fancy a landing given the terrain, but I guess some sort of ICS would work?

Not a paticularly early finish (in the ADs) and maybe some use of ships to get to the AI on the same island might have been better. Finished off the Germans in 3100BC, and the AI killed off one of the civs helpfully (can't remember which right now). I was tempted to use some archers to take out the Egyptians and Babs early but decided to wait for the crusaders since they had a few river cities and knew how to make city walls.

One bit of luck towards the end was that the barbs took Boston, so I sent a dip to buy it and give me a nice foothold, from where it went smoothly. Russians last to bite the dust when Kiev got bought out from under their feet. :D

I might go back to GOTM60 now and try and achieve my aim of conquering the whole world in 1 turn...

The GOTM 65 blog

The terrain seemed unsuitable for the first city, moved both settles south.
On the 5th turn built Carthage on three resources (iron, wine, buffalo)
The second settler opens a hut and unleashes the horde of barbarians - a horseman! (no unit in capital of course, can't even buy it).
The barbarian horseman kills my NONE settler. I hoped it would move to the capital to kill me (I couldn't even build a warrior in those turns he would reach it), so that the game were over and I could propably start again or something.
No, the horseman just goes away. I am stuck in stone age now.
Code of laws ready, developing Masonry

2350BC - Carthage finally builds a settler.
2200BC - discovered that there was a river just 3 tiles to the south! Gee... Built a city there. So much time lost. Had I moved one of the settlers one tile south to see that river, I wouldn't have built the capital in that tundras..
2050BC - Masonry ready -> Monarchy
1450BC - Monarchy -> Mathematics. Revolution, at the same turn switch to Monarchy
1150BC - a scouting phalanx opens a barb horseman in a hut. I am unlucky today. Well, the phalanx wins.
1100BC - met Germans. Traded Masonry for Literacy. They are 8 techs forward.
900BC - Mathematics -> Feudalism, built 3d city
850BC - Indians discovered Philosiphy, golden age. I missed this, too
825BC - finished another settler in Carthage, started Pyramids
750BC - luckily found a lone barb diplomat near Egyptians. 100 gold
724BC - barbs land lear Carthage. Met them with a phalax on a mountain. Started chasing the barb diplomat
625BC - oh, my, while chasing opened another hord of barbs! 6 horsemen and 1 legion... lost 2 phalanx..
575BC - while exploring with a freebie legion stumbled on Memphis. Declared war on Egyptians. Attacked Memphis.
550BC - damn barbs.. had to change Pyramids to a phalanx.. next turn they killed a settler.. cleared the barbs in 450BC
300BC - legion near Memphis fully healed, takes out one more phalanx, next turn Memphis wiped out.
225BC - met Babylonians, they are 10 techs ahead, traded Warrior Code for Writing, demanded tribute, got Map Making. American finish Pyramids. I start San Tsu in a city with 7 shields.
175BC - accepted cease fire with Egyptians for Construction, accepted peace for 200 gold. I have no good army anyways for a fast attack
100BC - Horsebackriding->Chivalry
75BC - traded Warrior Code for Trade and Horseback Riding for Currency by Egyptians
25BC - war on Egyptians again. Placed a phalanx near Thebes, waiting for catapults.
120AD - still besieging Thebes. Americans undertaken Great Library. Forgot to save in AD1, saving now.
160AD - Babylonians undertake Hanging Gardens. I am still building no wonders. 7 cities, discoveries 14 turns. Met Russians, traded Construction for Iron Working, Feudalism for Philosophy (let them have pikemen, I will attack with Cataputs anyways), Code of Laws for the Wheel, Writing for Mysticism. 4 tech trades, wow. Demanded tribute, got 150. Unsuccessfully attacked Thebes. The first cataput took out a phalanx successfully, but the second failed. In the next turn I took chances and attacked the second time with yellow catapult, but they had barracks there and without any more catapults I called off the attack.
180AB - Babylon builds Hanging Gardens
260AD - war on Babylonians
340AD - stole Pottery from Babylonians. I am so stuck..
440AD - finally discovered Chivalry. ->Engineering. Discoveries 35 turns
500AD - buyed Nineveh for 460 gold, took Medicine. Think I will research Gunpowder and then go for Explosives, if not win first.
560AD - met Americans, traded Philosophy for Republic (thought they have something else, but this was the only one they had)
620AD - sease fire with Egyptians for 50 gold. Americans shift to Macro Polo Embassy
660AD - sent a pikeman and a catapult to Babylon. Two archers kill both on a hill. Unlucky game.. Russians complete San Tsu. I shift to Marco Polo.
720AD - Amricans nearly completed Macro Polo. Oh.. I shift to Great Library. Maybe this will help me crawl out of the hole. Egyptians break cease fire.
740AD - got Bridge Building from Russians for Chivalry. Met Indians. Exchanged the Wheel for Politeism. Demanded tribute - 200 gold. got Seafaring from Germans for the Wheel, tribute 150
780AD - bought Great Library
820AD - Great Library yeild first results: Astronomy. Got banking from Idians for seafaring. Most cities are now building barracks before switchin to catapults
880AD - war with Russians

(that's it so far...)

Strangely, I thought that the whole map is tundras (Duke wrote that the map is 'bad, very bad').

(..it goes on)

900AD - finally guessed to get some maps for giving away techs.
1000AD - got Engineering from the Great Library just before finihsing it myself. -> Invention
1040AD - Invention -> Monoteism. Wanted Gunpowder, but it wasn't on the list. Missed my save again. Saving now.
1200AD - Russians offer peace, I accept, because I am pretty busy with Babylonias. They built walls in all cities, so my attack goes painfully slow. Russians give 150
1260AD - after building a fortress near Babylon and stacking 8 catapults there capture Babylon. It goes on.
1320AD - acquired University from Great Library. Gee, those guys are well ahead.
1360AD - Babylonians and Egyptians make an alliance vs Carthaginians. I thinks this won't help them. I attack Ur with 8 cataputs and capture Hanging Gardens, Navigation, 250 gold
1460AD - Destroyed the last (3d) city of Babylonians.
1480AD - captured the damn Thebes and destroyed Egyptians. There were lucky a few times when my veteran cataputs kept losing when attacking phalanx behind walls.
1495AD - discovered Monotheism. ->Chemistry
1510AD - bought Michelangelo's Chapel. Should I switch to Republic now?
1570AD - sneak attack by Russians. Most of my cities now have baracks and keep producing catapults and crusaders. I colonize the area near Germans and to the south of where Babylonians were. Started prepare for landing near Washington to capture Pyramids. I must switch to Republic now, but with attack still going on it is impossible. Russian captured Leipzig from Germans long ago, and my scattered though numerous forces will stack near it in a fortress. Damn rivers and walls.
1600AD - sneak attack by Indians. Wipe out a small city
1620AD - landed near Boston. War on Americans. Good news Americans have no pikemen. Crusaders will do a good job.
1630AD - captured Boston. No new techs. Thing seem to be not as bad as I thought...
1640AD - Captured Philadelphia. taken Economics
1650AD - captured Berlin, Germans destroyed.
1660AD - finally discovered Chemistry. ->Gunpowder Captured New York with Marco Polo
1700AD - captured Bombay. Keiv builds King Richard's Crusade
1710AD - bought Leipzig
1720AD - captured Dehli. cease fire with Russians. Capture Chicago. Washington builds Copernicus. Those guys doing me a favor building wonders just before I attack them
1740AD - wiped out San Francisco. Nothing can stop the rage of the great Cornholio! Colonizing the area between former Germans and the Russians.
1750AD - Americans liberate Chicago (left the city empty in the hurry). They take Invention. I take it back in the same turn. Capture Atlanta. In all these captures no losses: crusaders take everything out with ease. Again war with Russians
1754AD - bought Madras for 390. Indians destroyed. A flow of catapults and crusaders goes Nach Osten to the Russians. They seem to have no walls in cities. Two caravels with crusaders go to Russians from the other side
1758AD - Gunpowder! All baracks sold :( ->Metallurgy
1762AD - wipe out Odessa and take Physics. Capture Kiev with King Richard's crusade
1764AD - Completed Leonardo. All infantry updrages to Musketeers. Capture Kiev (540 gold plundered)
1768AD - Completed Adam Smith's Trading
1770AD - Russians liberate Smolensk with some crappy Explorer (left it emty :() and take gunpowder. Captured it agian of course for 400 more gold
1772AD - take Minsk and wipe out St.Peterburg. Americans founded another city, I brought a diplomat to buy it and made a cease fire for 1 turn.
1774AD - bought Buffalo. Now two capitals left: Washington and Moscow. Each has walls. 12 catapults at Washington already. I stack 2 musketeers with 10 catapults near Moscow. Stupid Legions attack me and fail. Less defenders now.
1778AD - losing 6 catapults capture Moscow with Colossus and Sun Tzu and 660 gold. Washington turns out to have only 3 defenders which fall after defeating 5 catapults. That attack on Washing was an overkill :( Capture Washington with Pyramids, Copernicus and 100 gold
END

End turn: 1778AD
Score: 236 for citizens, 240 for achievements. Bonus 1640 (this one is not counted?). Civ2 rating 164% (not impressive)

What I think was stupid of me here:
- built capital in a tundra area without a bit more exploring
- opened the first hut after founding the first city (as far as I know, barbs don't spawn before a city is built)
- kept trading stupid techs instead of making a standard rush to Monoteism and switching to Republic for celebrations
- gave away Feudalism and pinned myself to catapults instead of faster crusaders
- didn't trade maps early enough
- took chances a few times because I was hurrying too much, which led to even longer conquest
- missed Pyramids (well, wouldn't if didn't lag behind so much after that stupid barb in the very beginning of the game) and Sun Tzu (could buy it, but was too greedy)

Well, can't say the game was very much fun. Maybe if there were more ocean and less mountains it would be more fun. At least half of the map was not populated anyway before I filled it with size 1 cities on hopeless spots.

Quite a fun little game. Some early huts and built exploring units gave me a nice roving band of horses and archers, with a few chariots thrown in later, who managed to eventually explore most of our continent and plow their way through the first few civs I found. This band got rid of those civs very early, but it also meant I razed their cities rather than capturing them and being able to grow from them. By the time my crew reached the russians, the group was not healthy or strong enough to take out a size 4 river city, so they just sat on a mountaintop and let the Russians throw sheilds at them for a few hundred years, waiting for me to bring stronger units along.

My techs got all screwed up early on thanks to some untimely huts and from capturing those early cities. Luckily I got a couple nice techs from other civs later in the game (Map making, Trade) or I could have been stuck even longer.

With my early start on the first three civs (destroyed by 2000bc) I was aiming for a 500BC finish, but missed that by many turns. I could have finished a turn or two earlier, but at that point I was finishing up several vans for wonders so in the grand scheme of GOTM scoring I'm pretty sure it was worth it to wait a couple turns for the wonder points to kick in.

Nice game with an excelent start for me - some lucky huts, but balanced with some bad playing later. I've finished over 500 AD mainly because I've decided not to built MPE. My motivation was that I've met almost all AI civ preaty soon and MPE seemed useless. The problem was the americans were alone on an island and when I realised that I've lost a few hundred years.
Here is my log until 1 AD (after that only the americans were left and I've swiched to democraty and begun WLTKD until food was over):

Moscow was captured arround 100AD nad the russians were out.
That's all for this month.

In this game I did many mistakes in the begening of the game. I killed the Egyptians in about 500 BC but I lost many units. I was not enough patient and it made my game diffiult. I finally began to attack more seriously in the 1800s with musketeers, canons and diplomats. I won by conquest in 1909.

I did a replay of the game with more success this time and I won by conquest in 580 AD. In the begining I found the huts and built my two cities later. The fact that I knew the map was a big advantage, I killed the Egyptians and the Babylonians more rapidely in 2900 BC and 2400BC approximatively. For a bit more time I killed the Indians in 400 Bc, the Germans in 125 BC, the Americans in 100 AD and I finally killed the Russians in 580 AD.

I started playing this morning and have played till -1300. I have met Babylonians, Germans, and Egyptians so far and I am at peace with all of them. My plan is of course for a war game; given the terrain and other factors (restarts off). Luck hut has been good. I got a supported horse, an advanced tribe, 25g, empty hut, Currency, and Feudalism. I have not seen any barbarians yet. I built my first city on a mined hill next to the starting location.

I finished and submitted. I had a lousy time and had to force myself to finish it. I tried to play ICS style which I never do and I made a mess of a game.

Feudalism from a hut in -1400 was a mixed blessing. It took away warriors and handicapped my ability to rush build, but it allowed me to make Knights a lot faster than I would otherwise had. (I got Chivalry in -1000.)

I met Babylonians, Germans, and Egyptians by -1000 but made peace with them all and demanded tribute which they sometimes paid. By -1000 I only had 7 cities, much less than I expected, even though I got one advanced tribe. I lost one settler to Barbarians.

In -625 I allied with Germans against Indians and in -525 with Egyptians against Babylonians; each time for 50g. Warfare with Babylonians started the same turn and it was a disaster. I lost 3 Knights attacking Nineveh and could not kill even one of its defenders. Only a few turns earlier I had refused giving them Masonry so that they would not build city walls. But some how they did and my entire attack force was gone. To make matters worse, I lost an archer attacking what I thougt was a warrior on a hill but it turned out the warrior was stacked with a Phalanx and I lost my archer.

If I was not stubborn, I would have given up at that point; but I did not. I started making more units and surrounded Nineveh to starve it out. My plan worked and in -100 I took the city with one blow. Ur fell in +20 and Babylon in +80. But unfortunately it was razed and with it went the Pyramids. That bad omen should have told me to stop, but I did not. Babylonians were finally destroyed in 260.

Two city Egyptians were gone by +340. They lasted that long only because of how long it took my forces to get to them. Indians were my next target.

Knowing that by now everyone could have city walls and decent forces, I decided to go to Republic and speed up tech. Republic was established in 460. I immediately did some deliveries. Half of my cities started celebrating. In 700 I went back to Monarchy. By this time most of my big cities were around size 8. I got 200g from Indians for peace and violated the peace that same turn and attacked Bombay. Without city walls Bombay fell quickly, but I felt terrible. Delhi had city walls and cost me 2 crusaders before it fell. By 880 the Indians were destroyed as well.

The moment the Indian civilization was destroyed, the Germans received a whole bunch of techs through their Great Library! If restarts were on, I would have attributed it to that but restarts were off in this game. I do not know what caused this.

Germans were the next closest civ, but they were such good allies I could not get myself to attack them. Several times they gave me generous gifts even though my power was supreme. I decided to go after Russians and keep on exploring to find Americans. I also reestablished Republic.

Russians were far and had many military units. They were not advanced, but they did a marvelous job with their chariots and catapults. When I had their first city surrounded with a few units, they bought one of them off and neutralized my attack plans.

In 1020 I finally found Americans. Soon after I discovered that Boston is a barbarian city and bought it off cheap. Warfare with Americans started right away but I did not make much progress till I got steam Engine and built Ironclads. Then their coastal cities fell pretty quickly.

I missed going to Democracy by 2 or 3 Oedo cycles. That hurt real bad. But by +1500 I was in Democracy. Soon after I built Statue of Liberty. When I refused to take my forces away from around a Russian city my senate fell and the mollahs took over. I set luxuries high to put most my cities in celebration and relied on deliveries for tech advancement.

Americans fell in 1710 and Russians in 1740. They fought really well all the way to the end. I reluctantly cancelled my alliance with Germans and attacked them. They were weak and no match for my dragoons. I bribed their last two cities; the final one in 1754.
