This my first try at this, I have read the FAQ's and lots of post and I downloaded GOTM33.sav. When I tried to play the saved game I got the message "Failed to load Game, File is in Obsolete Format". OK what did I do wrong this time?

I got the same message with the first GOTM I tried to load in Test of Time. Fortuantely I had a copy of classic Civ II to play on. There is a patch on the downloads page to convert Test of Time to multiplayer gold, or you can pick up Civ II on ebay for next to nothing these days.

That is me. I am really new to the game but have fell in love with it. Which would be the better solution to download the patch or get Civ II or the Gold edition? Being a newbie, I am, of course, not familiar with anything but the "Test of Time".

Personally, I prefer the Classic/2.42 version because the AI civs are less hostile in diplomatic exchanges. It sounds, though, like downloading and installing the MPG patch would be quicker for you. There are several on-line places to order the Classic version for less than $10.

I think I shall order the Classic.

I have found Civ II Gold and Civ II Multiplayer Gold. Which is version 2.42?

Its me again. I was trying to find out the name of the patch that will make civ II/TOT play as Civ Classic. I found a zip file named Civ 2.42 but I am not sure it is the proper file. Help Please anyone.

I believe the Civ2 patch here at CFC will convert Civ2/TOT to "Civ2Gold", which is the MultiPlayer Gold Edition (sometimes abbreviated MPG or MGE or MPGE). This is NOT Civ2 Classic/2.42. The 2.42 patch is only to be applied to older versions of Civ2 BEFORE MultiPlayer came out. They are not hard to find; Micro Center has a <$10 shelf which always has several copies; see the graphic on the bottom of the Apolyton.Net/Civ2/forums page (which used to link to an item on Amazon, but does not seem to be working). There are other versions to beware of: I think they use Civ2Gold to refer to Mac versions, and there is a Call To Power and a Fantastic Worlds that you want to avoid too. There is also a PlayStation version you dont want either.
