What did you build in your cities along the way? I didn't do too well with this GOTM--the Germans are well ahead of me, but I do want to pay attention to what the better players did so I can see what I did wrong.

By -1000 the only structure I had was the original temple (you can tell that from the log since my cost is 1). I built units in all my cities except one that built Colossus with the help of food vans of course.
I didn't do too well with this GOTM--the Germans are well ahead of me, but I do want to pay attention to what the better players did so I can see what I did wrong.
Please post your log regardless. We all started as Pathetic in this game, which is actually good in the begining. It allows you to get gifts from allies. I got a few of those before reaching Supreme. If you have found the Germans, try exchanging techs with them and send vans to their cities.

I played till +500 last night. I will post a log soon.

Welcome, we met briefly in a previous spoiler, thank you for your interest here. You are in a common position and everyone gets better by browsing the forums and playing the game. If you haven't already you will come across lots of discussions on the lines of what works in which situation.

Just to set the scene in Ali's case we are not just talking a "better player" but rather one amongst the best. It is not the only measure but only Peaster has more GotM points than he has; even if Ali were to stop now it would be several years before the third placed person in the Hall of Fame, our moderator, could overhaul him.

Thirdly, the answer to your question is that for the period covered by the log, cities mostly build settlers, or caravans once trade is available, some military, and only rarely a building. In fact a strong player may have more wonders than buildings in the early and middle stages of games on normal maps. In this log it seems there is one building ("Cost: 1") in 1000BC.

I have always liked NON settlers. But this may be holding me back. Maybe someday, I'll figure it out. Regardless, I did not use the NON settler to found a new city. Instead, there was a lot of terraforming to do.

I had some trouble to come up with a decent game-plan, so I took some long breaks, but now (720 AD) things look pretty good. Here is the first part of my log:

Looks like you had 2 wonders by -1000 which is excellent. I barely had one.

Oops, you're right, I corrected it. During that era, I hardly produced anything else but vans for wonders. LH (which I rarely build) seemed like a good idea to help trade with Celts.
 
Indeed trading with Celts using Triremes and no LH would take about 4 times as long. I too thought about it but giving priority to Colossus lost it to Americans. The advanced state of the rivals meant a relatievely tight wonder race. By early + years all ancient and medieval wonders were built in my game. Celts have built 3 wonders. That by itself is a rarity.
 
I skipped colossus as I didn't have an "SSCable" city. I didn't like the one you chose because of the deserts, plains and lack of grassland. However, the one I eventually chose required a lot of work too. Colossus was still very useful after I had my shipchain established to Tenochtitlan.

Take a long break, playing on without a plan where to go is no good. Some considerations:

There is a Celtic Warrior inside Atlantis!

There is definitely something mysterious about Atlantis. Late in my game

1.: Fighter kills aztec phalanx
2.: Fighter attacks aztec dip, a message pops up telling me I can only evict dips that are within my territory, then the attack is executed anyway.
3.: Paratrooper tries to land in Atlantis, now a message pops up that I can't enter my (celtic) ally's city!
So I had to cancel the alliance to prevent my fighter from crashlanding into the ocean. The city was taken next turn when I was at war with both celts and Aztecs.

Compared to Ali, at 500 Ad I was a little behind in both cities and techs, in 1000 AD I was far behind in cities but a little ahead in techs. So even though my expansion was rather poor, it seems like my trading and tech-hunting was quite ok. Fully equiped, Eureka was generating 132 trade arrows, and grew to size 34 in the end.

I might pick up my 1000 AD save at finish it as EL.

Your progress between +500 and +1000 despite expansion is amazing. At +1000 you have half as many cities and half as much population, but 3 more techs, a lot more money, about the same wonders, and slightly more structures/city than I do. My only other advantage besides size, are the 13 extra vans I have. I am looking forward to the rest of your log.

Thanks a lot! But I'll leave some more time for others to catch up before I post the rest of my log. For now: I went on with my final plan of high-tech-conquest, had all wonders and 1 future-tech in the end.
At the beginning of my 1000 AD turn (saved at that point for the alternate ending with EL), I had 16 vans, but have put a lot of them in SETI to be completed next turn.
