Help-how to play online

I would like to know how to play online, when i use the TCP/IP option and host, and my friend searches for IP he cant find me, same thing vice versa. also when I don't fill in any IP it says no game are found. Do i need to download a patch or something?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Oh okay, i thought it was possible to play online (not just on LAN) (yes i know Hamachi is online, but its basically a LAN ) thanks for the link

By the way: if we both have routers how can we play against each other? is it possible to do that without some1 else hosting?
