OK, heres the deal: We finally found the receipt and mom took it back to the store. The store would only do a 30-day return but the warranty was for five years. My mom said that we have to wait for the company to send up the packaging before shipping it off -- Im not quite sure what shes talking about though.
If you're making a warranty claim, you'll have to send the defective item back to the company. They will then either fix it and send it back, or more likely, send you a new one.
The thing with mass production is that 100% quality control is impossible, so they spot check for defective units. Like every tenth one gets checked fully, every hundredth goes through destructive testing.
Say 2% of all units have a problem within the warranty period, they'll factor that into their costs and what they charge for their product. It's cheaper for them to send you a free one than to go to the effort of repairing and sending back every defective unit.
They keep the defective ones sent in, and use them to discover where the flaw might be - materials, the manufacturing procedure, shipping, and so on.
