:(

I'm not sure what the problem is so please give me a listen. Reinstalled several times, clean wipe of the directories(including in mydocuments/mygames). Tried: nonpatch, patched 1.09, patched 1.52 all the same problem:

Civilization 4 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have tried to generate a log for this but I can not locate the .ini file on my computer. The website and stuff says it SHOULD be in my my documents/my games/civilization 4 directory but after I erased that directory and reinstalled there is no such directory. I'm not sure but this could be the problem (lack of civilization4.ini). My dx and everything is fine.

I see the very first screen that says please wait but I do not get to the actual loaders (xml, pyton etc).

Please help!

If that directory does not exist in My Docments - and therefor no civ ini, then you have had problems installing it. It will not run without that there. You will need to de-install via Windows 'add remove' programs accessed via Control Panel (check afterwards that the programs/firaxis/civ directory has been deleted, if its still there do it manually.

Reduce your Pagefile size - at 5Gb+ its gargantuan :) Change it to 2000mb min=max

Patch it to V1.52 after re-install, if still problems come back here, but if the directory is still not created on install, its likely there may be a defective disc or corrupt file on the disc.

Done all that, reinstalled fresh several times and each time there is no new directories made in my documents. I DO have admin access so thats not the problem I think and this CD has installed perfectly fine before.

After I patched to 1.52 from my previous 1.09 (when it worked), it would not start up with the same error. That is what prompted my reinstall.. Is there a log somewhere where I can look at what happened during the install? What if I made my own directories in my documents? Would that help? I'm not even sure what the ini should look like =(

I have exactly the same problem described at the top of this thread, with the error message and missing files. I have tried several suggestions from the forum, such as creating the files myself or reinstalling it in various different places, but all to no avail.

It is not a faulty disc as I installed it successfully on another computer, but can't play on that computer as it is not high enough specifications.

I envy those people with graphics and crashing problems, I can't even get to the stage of finding out if I have those problems!:(

Same problem here!
Tried everything!!
I think it might have something to do with a language problem. I'm using a dutch version of XP home. A friend of mine (dutch) has the problem too.
