Hey,

I just dug up civ 3 and started playing again. I played a few games with the Double Your Pleasure mod and started looking around the net for new stuff, and these forums seem to be pretty active, so hi. o_O

As for my game... I can beat monarch level 95% of the time, and emperor I seem to fare pretty decently. Deity I've tried a few times, but I usually end up getting frustrated at how far behind the AI I get. I figured I would try this 5CC thing, so I started it on emperor with the celts on a standard map, random everything. I got pretty lucky with my starting location, mostly grasslands with a few plains and hills, and a fair amount of rivers.

What I had in mind WAS to win culturally, so I had my other cities help to build up my capital to population 12 as fast as they could. BUT I wasnt really used to the AI building wonders in 10 turns. I managed to get the great library, but that was about it until JS Bach's, so I wasnt sure if I was going to get the 20k, and if I did, it would probably be well after 2000 A.D. so it wouldnt be very certain. And sometime after I got my hospital and my cities ballooned up to 22+, I noticed that my culture bonus for the buildings being over 1000 years old just dissapeared, so my capitol went down to 54 culture per turn to 34, which basicaly means no culture victory. I didnt have a clue that that was a rule though, which kind of sucks.

Anyways, its now around 1780 A.D., everyone else is a fair way through the modern age tech, but I'm stick stuck halfway through the industrial age. I do have replaceable parts and luckily rubber popped up right underneath one of my 5 cities, so Ive been pumping out artillery and infantry with my 5 cities under war-time, each city making 1 unit/turn.

One major problem is that almost everyone is furious with me, and those who aren't furious are annoyed. I can't seem to figure out how to get them on the positive side again. I try giving them free luxuries, but that doesnt do much. I think I read somewhere that they don't like when you raze other civ's cities?

So the culture win out of the question, and most likely the diplomatic victory is out too. So is domination because of the five city thing. Space race is pretty out of the question considering how far behind in the tech race I am, so I figure I'm going to have to win through conquest.

As for where all the other civs stand, there was America, Iroquois and Aztec on the other supercontinent, but the Americans killed off the Iro and Aztecs are not far off. The Americans are the big superpower in the game. Then theres the English, who I've forced to declare war on me, so I could pound her into submission and give me some techs after razing some english cities on a few occasions. Theres the Spanish who I'm currently at war with because I was stupid and signed a MPP with the English. I'm going across their land razing their cities with the infantry + artillery that I've been pumping out, I will be settling for peace for as many techs, gold, etc that I can get out of it soon. There's also the french, who are advanced, but not much of a threat. And there's the Germans, who are the second superpower, and I've just been forced into a war with them because of the useless MPP with England. Ive just razed one of their large cities that they settled near my land, but I havent touched their mainland yet. Hopefully I'll get peace and maybe a tech or two.

Can I even win through conquest though? My main concern is the Americans pretty much have the whole other continent and multiple resources. Is it possible to get France and Germany to go to war against the Americans with me if theyre both furious? Because it would be pretty hard if I try to take on the states all by myself.

For those who want to look deeper into the game, here is the latest save file I uploaded to my website:

http://qlink.queensu.ca/~2dgp/Brennus of the Celts, 1786 AD.SAV

I think that's about all I wanted to say, sorry about the long read lol. Any sort of help would be extremely appreciated!

Edit: Not sure if this matters, but the game is PTW 1.27f, standard rules.

Happy first post. I think that I read a post like this where someone pulled out a conquest win from a similar position. Let me see if I can find it, it could be a nice reference for you.

EDIT:
Here you go

Zerksees has the thread that you are talking about. Its the second one down the row in the strategy article forum.

Whats wrong with the patch? Im sure that this has been brought up repeatedly but i just got C3C and cannot search.

What's wrong without the patch?
-- GPT bug
-- FP increases corruption
-- FP effect, too much corruption in city.

There were others, but these were the killers.

Check Conquests forum for details.

NB: with Conquests FP now does NOT create a second center of low corruption!! You have to adjust your play. But you get more bonuses for being commie, go figure.

Did you go into war-time mobilization? Culture output is halved when you mobilize.
