I bought the "laptop collection" yesterday, which includes several games including SMAC and SMAC:X. (What's funny is, it's got SMAC on one CD, and then the "Planetary Pack" w/ both SMAC and the X on another CD!)

Anyway, woah! What a completely awesome game!

I just love the mood of the game, for lack of a better word. The quotes and artwork and stuff are great!

Not anything I would call actually accurate to real life, but in a gee-whiz sci-fi way, it's top notch stuff. Gets the noggin goin.

Hey, did this come out before or after civ2? Cause in some ways it seems like a post-civ2, pre-civ3 sort of game. But I'm not sure.

It IS a great game:D Many of the new aspects in SMAC where so overwhelming (the voiceovers, wonder movies etc.) that it actually was this game that made me disappointed with Civ III. Instead of making it more complex they put all their effort in graphics. And yes, the graphics are great but there is something missing, and I suppose I just have to face it that "Civ III" as someone put it is a whole other game.
But the first impression of SMAC was a great experience for me too. I still get a kick out of playing SMAC and making my own units and I have yet several difficulty levels and several ways to end the game to experience... :)

It's not as great as Civ2, but it's high on the list. But for some reasons I don't play it as much... It's not the Civ3 problem since I've actually finished a SMAC game. And I loved the demo. Now I have the full version, but never play. Let's hope this thread brings me up and running SMAC again...

SMAX is the best game of all civ clones. It has so many otions and so many ways to play...
Social enginering and the diplomacy is top and something I realy missed in Civ3.

There's only one reason why I play CIVIII instead of SMAC: the AI is a more fierce opponent. But with the same AI intelligence SMAC would be superior, a.o. because of:

-terraforming is better/more advanced
-unit workshop
-diplomacy
-Deirde :)

SMAC was a good game, but I was never able to quite get over the problem of the graphics- not that I am a graphics whore by any means, but there really was not enough variation between the unit types, and it all started looking the same. Throw in the fact that the wonders and tech trees of Civ2 were generally much more interesting, and SMAC got kind of flat for me. Once you get into it, it's as addicting as any Civ game, but it never really grabbed me like Civ2. It represented a big jump in terms of how the factions behaved, the diplomacy model and the use of borders, though.

SMAC is the best civ game ever made. Anyone who disagrees is a heretic and should be banned forever. :D

According to the dates the manuals were printed in France, Civ II was released beginning of 1996 and SMAC end of 1998.
