How do you abandon city?

Is it still possible to abandon/destroy your own city in Civilization IV, because I've looked everywhere and I can't figure it out.

No it isn't. You can only destroy cities at the point where you capture them from another civ. You could try some arcane things with giving the city to another civ, attacking them, and then burning the city, but it doesn't work that well.

I've tried to give cities, but my options are lousy. The city I want to give away is red and some others good cities are white. When I hover my mouse, it say something like "we're not giving this away just yet."

How do you pick which cities to give, after all, I'm their leader ;)

There is no abandon button like in earlier civs. You could leave it unguarded and allow your enemies to take it then raze it when you take it back.

The designers of Civ4 seem to want us to carefully plan where and when we build our cities. Having the ability to abandon a city at the click of a button could be abused.

yeah, it "could" be abused, but I've had enough honest to goodness moments in my CIV games where I would give iron, copper, corn, and a crab just to be able to abandon one of my own cities.

(To me, the most apparent reason why abandon city isn't an option is because human players (and AI) would most likely raze their own city rather than allowing it the possibility of a culture flip.)

Y'know, thinking about it, just whip/starve it back to a level 1 city and then leave it undefended. Then it would have to be razed, right?

Not necessarily. Level 1 cities aren't automatically razed unless they have zero culture.

Thats annoying. I was attacking one AI, took a few cities, and without troops to go on sued him for peace; he game me lots of things (map, gold, gold per turn, etc), i accepted, but too quiclky; he game me a city far away at the other side of the map, in one ice corner of the north pole, without any troops garrisoning it, no buildings, 1 square away from the ocean and no food tiles around the city! All snow, no hills, no river, just ice, and a freaking high maintance who reduced my science by 20%.

In those times, i have to use my old spell from Baldurs Gate, "Elminster save game" and "Elminster Load Game" :)

I just go into worldbuilder, delete the city, then go back to the game. I cover the minimap when I do it so not to reveal anything. Sometimes you will see oil nearby or something but I never allow it to change my mind and I don't consider knowing this as anything revealing because 1) I know how to pretend I didn't see it. 2) I am going to see it when I discover said tech anyways. The map I refuse to see the layout of.

The biggest problem it seems to have is you can no longer have a complete scorched earth policy (where you abandon your cities as you retreat).

No way to raze cities but I'm not sure it should be permanent. Given that the Gov. has taken out cities before, but the fact is that unless they put a permanent facility (options which the game does not have) then the people would settle there again. You can take various gold mining towns or even the scanvenger towns that now show up in the west. when given the power of one warrior or even archer unit, a town shoud be able to neutralize the threat. Then again in modern times it should not be a factor...to take the Three Gorges Damn for instance, how many (if not cities then the blooming towns) to make that possible? Yes alot, but then it is the most awe inducing thing that we as humans have done in a great while! Just don't think of the enviromental impact please!!!!!!!

There is a mod that allows players to destroy/abandon cities... (anyone they own)

there are only two catches/drawbacks

1) AI doesnt use the option

2) It DOES NOT work in MP (too many out of sync errors)

it is easy to implement, just use the mod or if you use another mod... put that file in the appropriate python folder...

no wb problem

just press a hotkey (or two) in the city screen and viola! city option to destroy becomes available...

(I think there is also a destroy building option too)

hope this helps ;)

I still don't like it.

You founded or took the city!

This is Civiliation, not "displace the blue collars"!

that's you opinion ... but I was really directing it to those that wanted it...:mischief:

And I as only directing those that wanted to play the game as is.

Although if you want to play it differently then you should. Hell the ability to Mod is the best feature in the game so far. I even started!

It would be cool to add this to the game but give you a happiness penalty that effected all your cities if you razed one. (Of course, conquer/raze would not count in this) The bigger the city, the bigger the  faces in every city.

This would mean starving them first but honestly I don't see why there isn't a migration option to move population from one city to another. So starve them down and take a low penatly where say razing a city gives +2  for 60 turns on marathon or something. (Duration should be at least 2x that of slavery. Also there should be a minimum cap of at least 2  faces or more to influence people not to do it.)
