How do you know you are too far behind to win?

On immortal or diety how do you know when you are too behind in tech? I used to think that if I couldn't hit education before some ai entered the renaissance but I doubt this is correct. What is the tolerable literacy deficiency?

Well, what if you are going for a culture victory, for instance?
What would be tolerable tech deficiency then?

There's always the option of killing people or keeping them warring. I don't have much Deity experience, but there are only two conditions that will cause me to really give up; 1. I'm getting killed, 2. I'm not having fun.

When Cathy is on another continent and just entered Atomic while you're barely in Industrial.

Again for culture if you are behind on tech, mean you are likely are having hard time overcoming their culture, so as livsbrand says, just go and kill culture leaders. Since you are warring you need to be only about an era behind, but if you beeline arty and they have no flight yet you can do lots of damage or once that is no longer an option, just get triplanes. They can hold off bombers.

But in general in culture it is harder to come back if behind. Switch to different VC if you want to win.

I only really concede games when there's a total runaway on another continent or on the opposite side of Pangea.

Usual suspects are Russia, Iroquois, Arabia and Babylon. Discovering that Catherine is on another continent is the worst.

I don't think I've ever actually played out a game until an AI won, so maybe they linger for a long time before finishing the spaceship etc., I might be giving up on winnable games.

You'll only know for sure, if you build up your army and go attack someone. If you get your army wiped out, you're pretty much done. Until you've been fully defeated though, the game is still on since the AI is pretty bad tactically. If they have enough troops to stop you cold even with their terrible tactics, then yeah, you don't stand much of a chance. This applies to multiplayer too IMO, basically if you can field an army you're still in teh game. If that army gets flattened well, chances are you're not going to make it after all.

Back in GnK I was doing a OCC (box checked) CV with Eqypt aka wonder spam. I did well insta razing 5 cities close to my capital and had t297-t300 victory lined out when Cathy won a space race at t268. I was so bummed all I could do was watch I couldn't attack too far behind in tech and besides couldn't wade through hostile AI to get top her.

when a civ opposite the map with 12+ CS allies DoW you, embargo you and the city states, impose their religion and ideology to get more votes, and the rest of the world hates you.

when you see 15 or so impis knocking on your door (making the LONG march from 10+ tiles away because their leader coveted your land even though he still has plenty of room to expand) while your troops are off somewhere else and you don't even have X bows yet.

when someone finishes Hubble while you are still at plastics.

when Alex has 40 votes in united nations and 200+ influence on all his CS allies and too many cities for you to take him completely out.

etc.

...shows up in the game. I have problems with Greece. :)

Autocracy Alexander on a different continent flipping all your CS with Gunboat Diplomacy and coups. Fun times.

As I tend to rely heavily on city-states in all of my games going back to G&K, that's one reason I don't like Greece. However, spawning next to them several times has been the worst thing ever. Fortunately, haven't come across them in BNW yet.

I only quit when a powerful Civ unreachable by my military is finishing up spaceship parts and I'm nowhere close.

I actually find it better to spawn next to Greece. My worst games have always been Greece being on the other continent - by the time you find him he has +300 with all the CS and you have no hope of catching up before he wins DV. At least if we're next to each other I can try to wipe him out early.

So let me ask you this instead, out of curiosity. How many of you will sit out a game you're pretty much guaranteed to lose?
