I am having trouble working out how too play by email and how to join a email game. Is there a step by step guide to this.

i don't know we can play on e-mail
i always play on internet
if you ad the solution it will interest me

A friend and I finally figured out how to do this.

When you start the game, choose MultiPlayer, then Play By Email (duh!) and begin a new game, selecting all of the human players at this time (so if you want to be Cyrus of Persia, your friend George wants to be Roosevelt of America, and your friend Joe wants to be Mao Zedong of China, set that up now), along with size of the world, maps, etc.

After you finish your first turn (and make sure you're Player #1 so you're the first to go) and the green button turns red and you get the Press <Enter> to Continue notice, press the Enter key (real rocket science here  ); you'll get a notice that the game has been saved to a file that is to be e-mailed to the next player (in this case, it'll say either Roosevelt or Mao Zedong). The file will be in My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\saves\pbem\possibly-another-subfolder-using-your-"sign on"-name-for-your-PC; its name wil include the year of the turn and the player to whom it is to be sent. Attach it to an e-mail and send it to the indicated player (let's say it's Roosevelt).

When Roosevelt gets the file, he saves it to his pbem folder, fires up the game, chooses MultiPlayer and Play By Email, then Load Game. When he finishes his turn and presses Enter, a new save game file is created that is to be sent to Mao Zedong. Mao does the same thing, and gets a save game file that goes to you for your second turn.

That's it. If you change your leader's name -- say, from Cyrus to The Great Kahuna -- that name is used in the end-of-turn notice, and in the file naming convention (the one Mao sends to you).

Wow, what an archaic way of playing a multiplayer game! It could take days or even weeks to play a game that way. Wonder why they kept it as an option?

I'm not knocking it; the more options the merrier no matter what those options are.

my opinion, i know nobody asked.

since both appearantly have internet access (email) set it up here in the succession game forum. you can close the roster for just the players of the game. you can communicate via the forum or still in email, but the forum is easier.

Never left a chessboard sitting on the staircase and had a game spanning a week going on? This is the same thing, just with Civ. It's "archaic" like the printing press is - old idea, but still very useful in spite of alternatives with different merits.

When you get a job, kids, and a life, you don't always have X number of hours to devote to plunking your ass down in front of a computer to play a game of Civ, and chances are your friends won't always be able to time it with you. The play by e-mail option allows for several players who either can't devote the time or can't coordinate their time to play a complete game of Civ, turn by turn, over an extended period of time - and what's best is that they can do it whenever it's convenient for them. Civ games are big time investements which many people can't afford to make in several hour chunks. Several minute chunks spread over weeks works very well, and as such, the play by e-mail option is freaking spectacular and it would be incredibly shortsighted to leave it out of a Civ game.
