how does air combat work?

recently, I started waiting until a modern war. I built alot of bombers since artillery units are so slow. The AI I'm fighting with has SAM and fighters. I noticed about 50% my bombers get intercepted and like 20% got shot down. I just want to know the mechanics of air units and how to strike down enemy interceptors (if possible).

fighters can intercept interceptors. and against sam ive noticed that it is best to first attack with fighters till the intercept one then use your bombers. I think all units can only intercept once a turn. so basically use fighters first to draw out the intercepting units, than bomb the hell out of them.
