How does one add team colour to unit graphics?

There are so many beautiful units made by fellow civfanatics that i want to add and have added to my mods but many of them don't have team colour anywhere on them. So how can i add team colour to them?

Is it as i suspect just transparency 'colour'? How can one edit the dds so that the team colour will show (in gimp)?

Yes, Teamcolor will be displayed where texture is transparent.
Different painting programs handle transparency differently - if in doubt - google it.
I think with Gimp you can just 'erase' the parts you want transparent on the alpha chanel. You will need plugin (should be in Gimp Plugin Registry) to load and save the dds texture.
