How to play as Mehmed on Monarch

Mehmed is a very verstile and genuine leader in Civ IV. That is due to his traits (Expansive and Organized), which provides double granary build speed for cities to grow faster, extra health which really helps handle unhealthiness late in the game during the industrial age, faster production speed of workers so you can crank them out faster and improve tiles/chop earlier, faster courthouse, harbor lighthouse and factory production. I mean, you can build just about anything at double production speed! The starting techs (Agriculture and wheel) are also rather great and synergizes well with expansive due to the fact that you can crank out workers fast and build roads and farms quickly. Mehmed is also 1 tech away from chariots so he can be a potential early rusher. His UU, the jannisary replaces the musket gains a 25% bonus against archers, mounted and melee units, making a beeline to gunpowder defenatley worth a try. The hammam is a UU that substitutes the aqueduct and gives a +2 :) bonus along with the health one. Everything about him is solid and is easily one of the best leaders in the game. So I will show you how to play as him well with my strategy. This strategy works well on monarch, but I have never tried it on difficulty levels above it, so don"t expect it to work on higher levels.

Ancient Age
When the game starts, settle where ever you think is the best spot for your capital. Use your warrior to scout. Your first build should be a worker, and your first tech research animal husbandry if you have any animals in your BFC. If not, go straight to beeline bronze working. Once your build is done, create warriors until your city reaches a pop of 5. Use your workers to build farm tiles on resources or pastures to help grow your city. Once your pop is at 5, start chopping out warriors>worker>settler. Use your new workers to build a road to your city site. Then escort your settlers with your warriors to the spot for your new city. As soon as you get bronze, you build order should switch to axeman>worker>settler Keep on repeating this process until you have at least 11 cities. Now my strategy is to REX. REXing stands for Rapid EXpansion, which you keep on building settlers, workers, warriors and settling 11 cities by 1 AD. Why Rexing? Because his traits are perfect for that! Expansive for fast workers, granaries means you can save hammers and watch your cities bloom. Organized for fast courthouse for recovering your economy. That pretty much explains why rexing is the best thing to do. Although, if your warrior found a leader that is very aggressive, such as Shaka or Monty, a chariot rush may be your best choice. Use your newly built workers to build a road to your new city. Then use your warrior Now your first city should be settled wherever there is bronze. If there is no bronze, try settling near horses. Settling near bronze is your best choice, because you need it to build axes to defend yourself from barbs (this is important, since on monarch, barbs get spears and axes earlier.) You should whip or hammer the monument and the granary in every city. Then grow it until you reach the happy cap. Build whatever will help improve your city after that, but do not whip or hammer in cottaged cities. Research the following techs in this order:

Mysticism
Pottery or fishing
Animal Husbandry (If you haven't already)
Writing
Meditation
Priesthood
Code of Laws.

To fund your expansion and research, run scientists and work cottages in your food rich cities. You can also build the oracle in your production city if you like, for getting CoL or wonder failure gold. Once you have researched CoL, it's about time to reach the Classical Age.

Classical Age
Congratulations, you have researched CoL, which allows the construction of courthouses. Now a very important thing to do ASAP in in this phase is: whipping courthouses. Use hammers in your production cities to build them and whip them in the rest except for your capital. Whipping is bad for cottaged cities, but the courthouses are crucial for lowering maintenance so you can further expand. So whip your cities as I said earlier. Use your production cities to produce chariots and axes to place in each city so you can defend yourself from barbs and get the happiness bonus from monarchy. Your tech order should be

Monarchy
Mathematics (can be bulbed from a GS)
Currency
Calender (optional)
Civil Service

Medieval Age

Welcome to the medieval age! What to do here is simple, switch to bureaucracy, grab feudalism and beeline to gunpowder! What else should I say?

Renaissance Age
Once you have grown your cities quite a bit, and sitched to vassalage and thocracy it's time to whip slaves! Make 2 pop whips (No more than that, unless you want to wreck your cities!) of janissaries until you have an army of 32 soldiers, and then you are off! DOW on someone and conquer or vassalize someone! Keep on spamming those units and overwhelm your opponents! Once your enemies get muskets, start building trebs and continue warmongering. Although if you have a large enough force of Jannisaries, you can still defeat your victims with no problem. Your tech order should be:

Astronomy
Nationalism
Guilds
Banking
Constitution
Democracy
Beeline Steel

Also, get engineering as soon as your enemy gets muskets

I don't really use the draft, but the hammam makes drafting pretty amazing because of the extra happiness. So it maybe worth switching to nationhood, but i prefer the experience points from vassalage. Once you get to democoracy, set your slliders to 0% and start rush buying banks, markets and grocers. After that, you should begin rush buying millitary units until your enemy gets rifles. When that happens, bring your research back up and research steel for cannons.

Industrial Age
So if you have not yet beaten the game and your enemies now have infantry, then prioritize the following techs (in any order):

Rifling
Assembly Line
Combustion (if you need transports)
Artillery

Upgrade your units to infantry, artillery and transport units and continue your quest for world domination! Keep on cranking out those units (including anti-tanks) You should now have achieved a domination, conquest or diplomatic win.

The results from using this strategy are this in my recent game:
Spoiler :

Note: the only mod I used is Ethnic Artstyles, which is a graphics mod. It does not effect gameplay in any way.

In conclusion, Mehmed is an incredibly powerful leader and I recommend trying this strategy out yourself. Feel free to post comments on what you think of this strategy. :)

I think you shouldn't "research <stuff> techs in fixed order." It's never a good idea to be inflexible, and it's always a good idea to play the map.

Play the map and utilize his traits as much as you can. Honestly, I think Mehmed is one of the best leaders and dare I say the game practically plays itself when you have Mehmed. I can't remember ever playing a bad game with this guy.
