html/javascript/dhtml/whatever question: how do i make a counter?

i want to track how many people download my files on my site and display the information in a footer or something on a page in my site. how do i do this? is it complex? i found how to create a counter for a certain page but i cant find one that will "count" how many times a link was opened and display it somewhere else.
