Huge problem with coal resource?????

Hiya,

been playing for a while now on huge size map and I really needed coal to get my railroad going, so once I had the required technology I found this city of my enemy who had a coalmine. After I took the city and build the trade route to my city I now had access to coal.

Now here comes the problem, I been building lots of railroad and now all of a sudden my coal is no more????? I am still owner of the town that has the coalmine, and when I open up the city management screen the white circle is even over the mine itself, so its being processed. But no matter what I do, I don't get any coal from it, my workers cannot build railroads anymore??

I read some thread on this forum about not trading certain resources with friendly allies, could it be that I traded in my coal and no longer have any for myself??? If so what the hell can I do to get my coal back?? Having tanks go across map on normal roads just sucks, especially when many others do have railroads:(

Thnx for anyone who can clear this up for me,

You can cancel the trade deal with whomever you made it...then you'll get your coal back!

you can cancel the trade after 10 turns, open up your diplo window to see who u traded to. meanwhile, try to trade it back with another AI who has extra coal.

As a side note...how can you be playing on a huge map and not have multiple sources of every resource?! That's some bad luck.

Phuh ... it's not that much bad luck ... I play on Large and HUge maps all the time, nearly always grab the most land out of all AI and *OFTEN* don't have coal, oil, or aluminum and more than once don't have 2 of the three. Heck, a couple of games ago, I didn't have Coal, OR Oil, OR Aluminum :p

thnx for the tip, I will be alright then I guess:) And yep, only thing I am missing on this huge map is coal, I got all the other stuff but only 1 coalmine available to me, maybe the opponent has some mine somewhere but can't get that yet, not without declaring war which I don't want to. And they never offered me coal.

Sometimes I've had the AI trade coal to me ... go to the foreign advisor screen and click the RESOURCES button ... it'll show you what they're willing to trade. Now, the asking price may be high or you may not have what they want ... but it'll show that they have extra to trade out.

i've won a domination victory without ever getting aluminum in my territory. i was on future tech 10 and had nukes, yet could only drive around in ww2 style sherman tanks :p

Also, keep in mind that coal is not the "absolute necessity" that it was in Civ3. You can easily survive and prosper without it.

Coal seems to be one of the rarest strategic resources in Civ IV.

If I lack one strategic resource, it´s coal most of the time.

Ditto. I'm often waging a culture or border war to seize a close and vital coal supply.

hmm, I haven't ever found coal all that important anyway. If need be, you can buy it off someone at an exorbitant price and build all the railroads you want in a hurry and then cancel the deal. I get more frustrated by the lack of aluminum. For some reason I always have oil. I remember once in C3, there were two coals on the whole wap, both on the other side of the world in some crappy jungle controlled by a crappy AI, who had no idea it was there. So, in my personal experience, I have found coal to be more common than it was in C3 but obviously that could just be me.
